On This Date, September 27th, in 1986: Metallica bassist Cliff Burton was killed in Sweden when the band’s tour bus skidded off the highway and flipped onto the ground. Burton was thrown through the window of the bus, which then fell on top of him, crushing him to death. He was 24 years old.
Happy Birthday, Neil Peart!

Drummer and lyricist for Rush, Neil Peart was born on this day, September 12th, in 1952. Neil is without a doubt one of the most influential drummers in history, and I’d say that eight out of ten drummers I interview site either him or John Bonham as their primary influence. Remembering Keith Moon

On This Date, September 7th in 1978: Keith Moon, drummer for The Who, died in London of an overdose of Hemenephirin, a drug he was taking to cure his alcoholism. He was 32. I still remember that day like it just happened; what a fucking tragedy. In an oddly related story, on this same date in 1985, drummer Zak Starkey (son of Ringo Starr) and his wife Sarah welcomed their first child, daughter Tatia Jayne. Starkey has played drums for The Who since 1994, and actually received his first professional drum kit from Moon, who is also his Godfather. That kit later sold at Sotheby’s auction house for £12,000.

That I’m a huge fan of Jimmy Page goes without saying. Led Zeppelin! But I’ve never been able to work up much enthusiasm for anything Jack White does (too much hype always being a big turn off for me). And while I appreciate U2 (having been blown away by them live back in 2001) I certainly would not call myself a fan. But everybody keeps talking about this film – especially the Led Zeppelin fans on my FaceBook page – and Geoffrey wanted to go, so I figured what the hell. Even though my expectations were only moderate, I am really glad I saw this film because it was really just fantastic. Here are three things I learned while viewing It Might Get Loud: Continue reading Must See Film of The Week: It Might Get Loud
