Happy Birthday, Steve Howe!

Yes guitarist (also a member of Asia) Steve Howe was born on this day April 8th, in 1947. The band Yes was a passionate favorite of mine growing up in the seventies. In fact, one of the most crazy fun and highly memorable concerts I’ve attended was the co-headlining concert of Yes with Peter Frampton back in the summer of 1976, which took place before a crowd of 55,000 people at Anaheim Stadium in Southern California.

The Beekman Beer Garden Beach Club: Because Summer Never Has to End!

A couple of weeks back, a FaceBook friend posted the innocent-but-completely-clueless observation, “What happened to summer?” into her newsfeed. And I was like, “(Friend’s Name) summer has been over for awhile now.” Because, fall. Fall! It’s not hot out anymore, but it’s also not really cold yet: it’s just time to unpack all the comfy sweaters and light outerwear from wherever you store it (me = the closet). The Jimi Hendrix Experience Supports The Monkees 1967 Tour: Were You There?

Yesterday I had an interesting comment added to This Post from a Dutch Jimi Hendrix fan and collector named Ben. Ben has a web page where he documents stories and images from the 1967 US Summer Tour by The Monkees on which The Jimi Hendrix Experience were the support act. Ben writes, “if you are a Fan of The Showdowners, Lynn Randell (other support acts on the tour) or The Monkees and you have been to the concerts seen below then I would like to speak to you. I am very interested in your “Experience” from those days. I hope you will be able to help me out. Any help will be welcome, from your personal memories, photos, newspaper clippings and even sound or/and video recordings from these concerts where The Jimi Hendrix Experience was the support act.” You can visit Ben’s page at This Link and if you were at one of these shows and have any information to contribute to his quest you can email him at maythisbelove@yahoo.com. Good luck, Ben!

Movie Review: Going the Distance is Surprisingly Hilarious and Fun!

Drew Barrymore and Justin Long
Drew Barrymore and Justin Long Grope Each Other in Going the Distance

As big of a movie fan as I admit to being, generally speaking, I would much prefer to have my eyes gouged out with a hot poker than sit through a Romantic Comedy. Because contrary to popular belief, the lowest form of humor is not the pun, it is the romantic comedy: which is almost without exception neither romantic nor funny. So, when I made the decision to attend a screening last evening of the new Drew Barrymore flick, Going The Distance, I was hedging bets that I’d find it irredeemably heinous: especially based on the commercials which make this film seem like viewing it would be only slightly more fun than root canal therapy. But, surprise! I was wrong: Going the Distance is awesome!
