Levine Detournement Invite

Worley Gig has taken a bit of a break from Gallery hopping this summer: partly because lots of the galleries are on their summer hiatus and partly because we’ve just been too busy doing other fun things. Oh, New York Contemporary Art Scene, how we have missed you. But what better way to get re-immersed in the vibrant Chelsea gallery scene than with Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s latest group show, Détournement: Signs of the Times, brilliantly curated by Carlo McCormick, which opened this past Thursday. We’d especially like to thank the gallery’s Associate Director, Malena Seldin for allowing The Gig to photograph the show in the empty gallery prior to the start of Thursday night’s opening reception.

Streets of the World collects the work of 40 global contemporary  artists that have emerged from the Street Art Movement. A number of the participating artists, such as Banksy, Kenny Scharf and Os Gemeos, represent International Household Names of Street Artists. Others, including Ron English, Logan Hicks, and collectives The London Police and Trustocorp, exhibit regularly at Opera, so we were already familiar with, and fans of, their work. But many others were exciting  discoveries. Overwhelming new favorites are selected works by How and Nosm (from Germany), Interesni Kazki (Ukraine) and Spain’s Sixeart. There is so much to see at this exhibit, and Opera has accented every wall — including the stairwell and the entire basement space — with exciting paintings, sculptures and collage.

Title Unknown by Greg “Craola” Simkins (All Photos By Geoffrey Dicker)

In celebration of  South Park’s 15th anniversary celebration, Comedy Central and pop surrealist painter and street artist, Ron English have joined forces to curate 15 Artists Interpret South Park at New York’s Opera Gallery. The show kicked off on March 28th, but i just had time to get over to the gallery today. You have one more week to see the exhibit before it closes so get yourself over to 115 Spring Street in Soho ASAP!

Ron English (who has several paintings in the exhibit) hand-picked the other 14 artists, who were drawn from the street and the pop surrealism movement to join him in displaying their South Park interpretations. The artists are unified by their love of the hit series and the passion they bring to their work. Their interpretations feature the South Park characters and the iconic moments throughout the series history. The featured artists also include: Travis Louie, Colin Christian, Sas Christian, Beau Stanton, Kid Zoom, Dave White, KaNo, Kathie Olivas, Clark Fox, Greg Craola Simkins, Mark Dean Veca, Lindsey Way, Naoto Hattori and TrustoCorp. Also displaying his work is Mars English, Ron’s young son, who any fan of English‘s art would immediately recognize as the primary model for the majority of his father’s amazing paintings.
