On This Date, September 15th, in 1981: Thomas Dolby released his second solo single, “Europa And The Pirate Twins,” from his debut album, The Golden Age Of Wireless. The single reached the #48 spot on the U.K. singles chart and the #67 spot on the U.S. singles chart. In “Europa And The Pirate Twins” Dolby makes use of a fantastic word economy to tell the story of a man who pines for a long-lost adolescent friendship with a woman who has grown up to become a famous starlet. For my money, it is one of the most gorgeous and painfully sentimental songs every written.
Somehow, I had the TV tuned to NBC at 10:00 PM last night when the new Jay Leno show debuted. It was about as funny and cutting edge as something my late grandmother would have enjoyed. In too many ways it reminded me of the now infamous, ill-fated Chevy ChaseShow, which ran for only five weeks back in 1993, because it just sucked wildly. I don’t know if Jay is going to really need to rely on ratings to stay on the air, or if it’s just a given that he might draw a large enough viewership from folks my parents’ age to keep advertisers happy. But I do know that I am pretty sure I heard him use the word “Poon” when he was telling his ‘off-color’ jokes near the end of the hour. And that was kind of funny.
I found this image on one of my very favorite websites, Hello Kitty Hell. I love the way it portrays a “Hello Kitty–meets-HR Giger” vibe, but I’m unable to confirm whether or not Giger is the actual artist in this case, or if this rendering is merely a“Giger-esque” tribute to the Swiss surrealist. You’ll see what I mean if you compare the Hello Kitty demon to the image below. Yeah, similar.

Have you heard / read yet about the classless, douchebag stunt Kanye West pulled at the Video Music Awards last night? The way he completely upstaged Taylor Swift? Or did you maybe witness it in real time? If not, let me know and I’ll send a link to the YouTube video – assuming it hasn’t already been posted a million times to your FaceBook news feed. Gee whiz, what a tool that guy is. Continue reading Kanye West: Tool of The Century!→
