Little Ghost Eating Bread (1934) depicts a mysterious scene within an other worldlylandscape. Animated by Oppenheim‘s dark sense of humor, it portrays a cartoon-like figure about to step off a ledge while merrily nibbling on a loaf of bread. A cloaked form is partially visible on the right.  Continue reading Modern Art Monday Presents: Merit Oppenheim, Little Ghost Eating Bread

Eye On Design: Engineering Temporality Cabinet (Series) By Tuomas Markunpoika

Cabinet

Finnish desirer Tuomas Markunpoika explores memory and metaphysics in the design of all his objects. In honor of his grandmother, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, Markunpoika created Engineering Temporality (2012) by welding hand-cut rings of tubular steel over a traditional wooden cabinet. He then burned away the cabinet, leaving behind a shell of blackened metal rings; a ghost or shadow or the original form.

Ghost & Giz Mural at 44th Street and Eleventh Avenue in Manhattan

Ghost & Giz Mural
All Photos By Gail

While on a my way to a Fashion Week event, I spotted this very fun, psychedelic mural on the side of McQuaids Restaurant & Pub, located at the corner of 44th Street and 11th Avenue. At first, I thought it might be the work of Buff Monster, but it turned out to be by graffiti artists Ghost and Giz.

Here’s another shot.

Ghost & Giz Mural Close Up

The Mural is part of Animal NY’s Pub(lic) Art Project, which will see new murals by other street artists cycle through the space every few months. This one has been up since July, 2014.

Ghost Cake!

Larger Ghost Cake
Very Scary

How cute is this delicious-looking cake that, when sliced, reveals the image of a scary Ghost? Plus, little Marshmallow Ghost accents. Seriously, it’s adorable. Sadly, the website from which I originally snagged the above image and accompanying recipe has gone offline, but I found another recipe which will allow you to achieve similar ‘ghostly’ results at This Link!

Jeremy Dower Intrigues With Canis Mortuus Familiaris

Now here’s an art show that’s really gone to the dogs, but in the best way possible! Canis Mortuus Familiaris, at Bold Hype Gallery through May 7th, 2011 consists of artist Jeremy Dower’s digital prints and sketches of fantasy canines in various states of otherworldly beingness. From ghost dogs to balloon dogs, to imagined mutant dogs and miniature metal sculptures of little doggy skeletons: Dower’s work enchants and  fascinates. This is my favorite show of the year so far!
