Well, I had to stop and snap some Instagram fodder when I walked by this restaurant (seeĀ B for Bozo rating in window) located on the north side of Houston Street just east of Avenue A. Continue reading Roomful of Bozos

Zebra Cow By Ron English

The last couple of times I passed by the Popaganda Pop Up Store on the corner of Washington and Gansevoort Streets in the meatpacking district, the shop was closed. So I’m not sure if it’s closed for good, or was just not open for business on those days. But anyway, that’s where I saw this Zebra Cow.

Modern Art Monday Presents: Edgar Degas, Young Woman with Ibis

PYoung Woman with Ibis

French artist Edgar Degas (1834 – 1917) made sketches of this composition, Young Woman with Ibis during his second stay in Rome (1857 – 58). Originally conceived as a depiction of a pensive woman, the painting assumed a mysterious air when Degas added the imaginary Middle Eastern cityscape, the pink flowers, and the two red ibises around 1860- 62. About the same time, he also considered adding the brilliant birds to his large historical painting, Semiramis Building Babylon, which resides in the MusĆ©e d’Orsay in Paris.

Photographed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.

Video Clip of The Week: Deaf Radio, “Anytime”

As we continue to creep as slowly as possible towards the day when Americans will either vote to dodge the world’s biggest bullet and move forward with progress, or just blow up the fucking world, it’s almost comforting to indulge the feelings of impending doom with the seductive, atmospheric dirge that is Deaf Radio’s “Anytime” — a song so good, it almost hurts.

Hailing from Athens, Greece, Deaf Radio (seriously, what a great name) serve up four all-killer-no-filler minutes of lush, woozy minor chord gloom with a tune that’s favorably reminiscent of Bauhaus — all menacing and alluring simultaneously — as well as one of my absolute favorite obscure bands from California, Starflyer 59 (if you are as fond of that band’s 1999 album, Everybody Makes Mistakes as I am, you probably have little stiffy right now). Visually, “Anytime” is a hallucinatory fever dream of enigmatic and captivating random images that tease and taunt. Personally, I want toĀ  know what is up with that sink full of Goldfish.Ā  “Anytime” is the first single from Deaf Radio’s upcoming album Alarm, which is due this winter, so keep your ears open for that action, because I bet it’s just insane. Like Deaf Radio on the FaceBook at This Link. Enjoy!
