Little Ghost Eating Bread (1934) depicts a mysterious scene within an other worldlylandscape. Animated by Oppenheim‘s dark sense of humor, it portrays a cartoon-like figure about to step off a ledge while merrily nibbling on a loaf of bread. A cloaked form is partially visible on the right.
The painting was displayed in the artist’s first solo exhibition, at the Galerie Schulthess in Basel in 1936. There, it was purchased by Fred Connolly, a British expatriate affiliated with the anti-fascist artist collective Gruppe 33, of which Oppenheim was a member. This painting was acquired directly from Connelly’s heirs.
Photographed in the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan
