Barbie’s Magical Mansion, created in 1990, was the largest ever Barbie house at the time of its launch. An elaborate and detailed domestic scape in pink, the house mimics Colonial Revival architecture, with fanlights, neoclassical columns, and balustrades of the type imported to America by European settlers. This style of architecture has strongly influenced the design of suburban homes with its aspirational overtones of status and tradition. It’s no secret that 2023‘s hugely successful Barbie: The Movie, directed by Greta Gerwig, broke box office records and became a global pop-culture touchstone. To create their vision of Barbie’s famous home, set designer Sarah Greenwood and decorator Katie Spencer drew upon the history of the DreamHouse while bringing the interiors to life with pieces by contemporary designers such as Adam Nathaniel Furman , whose whimsical Glowbule Staccato Floor Lamp is seen in the film. Pink Thing of The Day: Barbie’s Pink Glitter Roaster!
On Saturday March 9th, 2019, I was fortunate to attend the wildly-anticipated Barbie 60th Anniversary Pop-Up Experience; a one-day only celebration of Barbie’s life and legacy marking the occasion of her 60th Birthday, so to speak. The free event, which had non-ticket holders queuing up for a quarter mile along Broadway in SoHo, was set up like an interactive Barbie museum.

Pink Thing of The Day: Life Size Barbie’s Dream House
Jesus God, I would so live in this place. This 3,500 square foot house in Malibu, California was designed by “Happy Chic” interior designer Jonathan Adler in March of 2009 for Barbie’s 50th Birthday and was never open to the public. At least we have photos, viewable via the above link, to see what a masterpiece of pink pop culture it truly was. *Sigh*
