Beau’s Mechanical Shark Week at Amy LI Projects

Do you like sharks? I sure do. Amy Li Projects is currently hosting a solo exhibition with a fun shark theme: Mechanical Shark Week, featuring all new paintings by one of NYCs most popular Street Artists/ Taggers, Beau. Shark Week!

I didn’t write down all of the official names of the paintings, so I just made up names that I think describe what is happening in the picture, and then I captioned each photo accordingly, so please enjoy that.

Beau’s paintings in this series include many references to other modern and contemporary pop artists, such as Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Keith Haring and Claes Oldenburg. Beau (who in person, strongly resembles actor James Franco) admits that he enjoys working “in variable styles and mediums,” so of course the influences are going to creep in there. And for that, we say, Good On Ya!

Beau says that having dexterity with a broad range of genres allows him to render styles most fitting for any environment. “A lot of my work grows out of necessity,” he reveals. “Usually a client steers me towards something they feel, or that strikes them.”

He continues, “I hold myself to a standard approach that an artist must practice in multiple mediums to encourage a rich growth in perception and technique, and in a classically trained manner.” He also just likes to just ‘let the spirit move him,’ as they say, while “trying to find new ways to break the rules that have already been broken many times over.” You Go, Beau.

“I also like the challenge of completing paintings and or projects of any media within my reach,” he concludes.

As you can see, these are all pretty darn great, and the price point is around $300 – $500, so Beau’s work is very affordable for anyone who wants to build their collection with quality pieces from a very up and coming young artist.

Beau’s Mechanical Shark Week will be on Exhibit Through June 3rd, 2015 at Amy Li Projects, Located at 166 Mott Street in Chinatown, NYC.

Hanksy’s Best of the Worst Pop Up Art Show!

If you weren’t making the scene at 104 Delancey Street — the former site of a Chase Bank — this past weekend, then you missed out on your chance to see street artist provocateur Hanksy’s Group Show and Pop Up Happening, Best of The Worst! It was a good time.

For the uninitiated, Hanksy is an “unknown” tagger/artist who emulates the style of Bansky while often incorporating the likeness of actor Tom Hanks. Best of The Wurst not only featured perhaps 20 or so of Hanksy’s punny slogans and celebrity icon parodies, but also included a separate pop up Street Art Gallery within the large gallery space, as well as Free Beer and Asian Dumplings, a Skate Ramp, Photo Booth, Free Vintage Pinball Games, a DJ, and a Clown making Penis Balloon Hats. Just being serious.

Behold: The Line Ride, which Stretched East to Essex Street and then Headed Uptown

The event kicked off Saturday evening at 6 PM, when the doors opened and — thanks to Geoffrey arriving early and holding a space in line for me! — we were inside the graffiti covered walls of this cavernous space within ten minutes. Adding an atmospheric backdrop to Hanksy’s works were contributions from Street Artists such as Left Handed Wave, Frank Ape, Magda Love, Clint Mario, Gilf!, CB23, Don’t Fret, Lexi Belle, Nda, Elle, Roycer, Joseph Meloy, Beau, Claw Money, Tony Depew, and Col Walnuts.

Gag-Osian Street Art Gallery

In the left rear corner of the space, visitors could check out the Gag-Osian (get it?) Street Art Gallery, with its separate exhibit, Purgers & Acquisitions: Selling Out Tomorrow’s Urban Art Stars, Today. This area displayed small canvases and sculptures by a variety of Street Artists of varying degrees of popularity, priced to sell!

Affordable Hanksy Swag, in the form of limited edition prints and T-Shirts, was also available.

Sucklord Gets Interviewed

I spent about an hour inside before I needed air and decided to head home. As I walked back up the street, I noticed the Sucklord lurking in a nearby doorway, being interviewed by god knows who. All in all, it was a most enjoyable evening.

Dorian Grey Gallery Presents Group Graff

It’s always fun to discover cool new shops, restaurants and places to hang out in your own neighborhood, which was the case this past Saturday evening when we were introduced to the Dorian Grey Gallery, a hip art space located just west of Avenue A on 9th Street. Although Dorian Grey has apparently been open for close to two years, we had no idea it was there until we attended the opening night reception for the gallery’s currently exhibit, Group Graff. As you might have guessed from the name, and show “Tag” pictured above, this is a group showcase of various types of Graffiti and Street Art — a genre in which the gallery specializes.

Group Graff features works by New York artists such as Keith Haring, LA 2, Futura, Richard Hambleton, COPE 2 & CRASH, as well as International artists including Bansky and DOLK, and modern innovators XAM, SeeOne, Penn, Hanksy and AVone. Some of the pieces we had seen before but others were new discoveries. I’d say this a good exhibit to check out whether you are a seasoned fan of the Street Art or just want to get a bit of introductory exposure to this very hot creative movement.

Dorian Grey Gallery also seems to attract a fun and diverse clientele. We ran into a few old friends in the crowd as well as many local artists! We will definitely be keeping this place on our radar for future shows.

Group Graff is on Exhibit until May 16, 2012 at The Dorian Grey Gallery, located at 437 East 9th Street between 1st Ave and Ave A. in NYC’s East Village. Hours are Tuesday – Sunday 12 Noon -7 PM.
