Marvel and Star Wars Mark Black History Month With New Variant Covers

To honor Black History Month, Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm return with a new set of Star Wars Black History Month variant covers, arriving on select titles throughout February.

This year’s collection features four striking covers by acclaimed Marvel artists Karen S. Darboe, Ken Lashley, Mateus Manhanini, and Ernanda Souza. Together, the works spotlight Black characters from across the Star Wars universe, spanning classic cinema, recent Disney+ series, and interactive storytelling. The release also coincides with the 10th anniversary of Star Wars’ return to Marvel Comics, underscoring a decade of renewed visual and narrative expansion.

Nick Cave’s Amalgams and Graphts at Jack Shainman Gallery Tribeca

Well, it’s Black History Month, and to start the celebration let’s take a deep dive into a  fabulous new exhibit by one of our favorite African American artists, Nick Cave! Through March 29th, Jack Shainman Gallery is hosting Amalgams and Graphts, an exhibition of new work by Cave, marking the inaugural presentation at the gallery’s new flagship Tribeca location. Amalgams and Graphts introduces two distinct series that push the artist’s singular style and vision to an epic realm, while maintaining an intimate and personal conversation with his audience.

Eye On Design: Evening Dress By Ann Lowe

African American designer Ann Lowe (18981981) learned to sew from her dressmaker mother, Janie Cole, and her grandmother, Georgia Thompkins. One of her earliest pleasures was crafting fabric flowers, a skill that became one of the defining characteristics of her beautifully constructed occasion gowns for debutante and brides. This Evening Dress designed by Lowe for A. F Chantilly (1968)  presents a terrific example of this skill.
