On occasion, New York City hands you a moment so random and delightful that you can’t help but stop, stare, and say, “Only in NY!” That’s exactly what happened on Veteran’s Day, when I stumbled upon a mysterious, hand-painted truck parked on Franklin Street in SoHo — not a food truck, not a delivery truck, but a fully functioning Japanese sento bathhouse and sauna on wheels, created by a 27-year-old artist from Japan who is currently steaming his way across America. Sesame Street Characters on Box Truck
Anyone familiar with Sesame Street will recognize the likenesses of both Cookie Monster and The Count on the side of this well-tagged box truck, which I snapped a few photos of as it was stopped on Lafayette Street. The truck is the work of the COD Cru, a Bronx-based group of graffiti artists that’s been active since 1983! TC5 and KMS are two of the artists who left their tags on the truck. I wish I had been able to get a glimpse of the other side!

Case in point: Columbia Street. “Where The Fuck is That” you ask? It’s on the LES near Delancey, and walking north it eventually turns into Avenue D. But it was on Columbia Street, that I saw this box truck idling in front of a grocery store, bearing Buff Monster’s awesome pink tag, along with his signature Mr. Melty character. Sweet.
Awesome Graffiti Box Truck!
The Graffiti Box Truck is not that rare of a thing in NYC: you see them all the time. What is rare is one that features contributions from maybe a half-dozen graffiti artists from across the globe. This truck features tags and murals from Scaner (Canada), Harry Bones (Spain), RASK (Los Angeles), Hoacs (NYC), MUSA (Spain) and others, and that’s just what I could see on the two sides of the truck that I was able to shoot from the sidewalk!
