The Damned Documentary

Coming of age in the late 1970s, I was in the right place at the right time to enjoy the character-shaping birth of British Punk Rock,  as well as having a ground zero experience of the Southern California Punk Rock movement, which was equally legendary.

It was a great time to be a teenage music lover! It was also a blessing that driving up to LA to see a punk band was not always necessary, because Orange County had its own live music venue that booked both US and UK-based acts; a dive-y little joint, hidden away in an industrial neighborhood of Costa Mesa, which was called The Cuckoo’s Nest. It was at The Cuckoo’s Nest in 1979 that I first saw The Damned live, on tour in support of what is arguably still their best and most popular album, Machine Gun Etiquette.

These fabulous photos of High Fashion creations come from the Punk CanCan Gallery at the Jean Paul Gaultier Exhibit on now through February 23rd, 2014 at the Brooklyn Museum. I visited two weeks ago and was completely blown away by how imaginative and fun this multi-gallery exhibit is. It is a must see for all lovers of art and fashion.

Okay, judging from the multiple layers this is probably a Wedding cake, dontcha think? It may be a Birthday cake, but whatever the occasion, it is the Greatest Cake Ever in the Universe of All Time, because The Beatles! I bet it tastes delicious also, but, honestly, it’s too cool to eat!

The Los Angeles-based street artist Thierry Guetta, better known as Mr. Brainwash, has lost a copyright case involving a 1977 photograph of the punk rock musician Sid Vicious shot by the British photographer Dennis Morris. Guetta had claimed that the seven works he created using Morris’s black and white photograph, including one mural and one collage made of broken vinyl records, were sufficiently altered to be protected by the fair use defence, which allows for the use of copyrighted material for commentary, criticism and parody.
