Save the Date: Stephen Romano Gallery is very honored to be presenting the group exhibition Saint Bowie, opening March 2, 2016, with a reception from 5 – 9 PM. Saint Bowie will be comprised of artist-made devotional mementos, Ex Votos, Santos, Spirit Photos and other reliquaries which mourn the loss of the Starman, and also serve as a means by which to commune with Bowie on the other side.

Saint Bowie will feature art by some of our very favorite artists including Sas and Colin Christian, Nyazhul Blanco and Lori Field, among many others, listed below.

Colin Christian’s Trypophobia at Stephen Romano Gallery

Fans of sculptor Colin Christian’s pristinely manufactured, fiberglass futuristic Barbie Doll-like sculptures and Hello Kitty aliens are in for something completely different with Trypohobia, the artist’s disturbing new show that opened this past Saturday with an outrageously fun reception at Stephen Romano Gallery in DUMBO. Stephen Romano Gallery Presents In Missa Interfectionis

What a great discovery it was to find out about the existence of the Stephen Romano Gallery when I went to one of their first group shows last June. Even though it is a teeny bit of a jaunt from Manhattan to DUMBO, going there gives me an excuse to visit a very cool neighborhood that is home to lots of amazing street art. I also appreciate that Stephen Romano has a keen talent for curating these Surreal, Dark Pop exhibits that harken back the early days of the Last Rites Gallery, and even incite feelings of nostalgia for the late, great Bold Hype Gallery. What a bummer that that place had to close.

Mysterium Cosmographicum Group Show at Stephen Romano Gallery

Last Thursday, Stephen Romano Gallery lured me away from my familiar haunts in the Chelsea Gallery District all the way to DUMBO, Brooklyn for its new group exhibition, Mysterium Cosmographicum, featuring works from over 30 international artists on the theme of the artist’s relationship to the cosmos. Seriously, how could you stay away from that? I’d been invited to the opening reception by one of my favorite local artists, Eric Richardson (I am proud to own two of his paintings in my collection) but I was super excited once I got to the gallery to see both Colin Christian and Kris Kuksi, two other fantastic artists whose work I always like to support, participating in the show.

Things got dark and scary at Last Rites Gallery, as they are wont to do, at Saturday night’s opening reception for the Gallery’s Fifth Anniversary group show. Of course, dark and scary is how we like it at Last Rites, a gallery dedicated to exhibiting Horror Themed art and surrealist / pop art that falls to the right of the macabre.

Curated by Gallery Director (and freelance photographer) Derek Storm, this collection features paintings, sculptures, drawings and mixed media works by over forty artists, including a selection of Last Rites‘ roster of represented artists such as Chris Mars, Jason D’Aquino, Chet Zar, Beau Stanton and the legendary HR Giger.

Colin Christian has a beautiful sculpture in the show and his equally talented wife, Sas Christian has contributed a painting, below, that to me looks a lot like actress Naomi Watts.

Mark Kostabi was there! It is always fun to see Mark, he is so nice and such a charmer!

It is not very challenging to pick out Mark’s contribution to the show. His style is extremely distinctive.

I liked this one a lot.

Last Rites Gallery Painters

These two artists created this paint during the exhibit. I guess that qualifies it as “Performance Art.”

This very fun and diverse exhibit will be up until May 18th, 2013, so be sure and make a trip over to Last Rites at 511 West 33rd Street while you can!
