Must See Art: Dead Or Alive at The Museum of Arts and Design

Fabian Pena’s Skull Made From Fragmented Cockroach Wings

If you are looking for an unforgettable “Oh Wow,” experience to take you away from the mundane and fill an hour or two of your all too limited leisure time, look no further than Manhattan’s Museum of Art & Design (MAD), where you’ll find one “Oh, Wow” reaction after another on the two floors occupied by a unique exhibit called Dead or Alive. Brought to you by the creative minds of over thirty international artists, Dead or Alive features sculptures and installations made up of such things – some formerly living, some merely by products – as botanical specimens, feathers, silk cocoons, bones, hair and insects. Damien Hirst, Flooded McDonalds and Other Delights!

End Of An Era

A Saturday or Sunday in Manhattan usually means one thing: Geoffrey and I will be having an Urban Adventure. Diamond Encrusted Toilet!

Diamond Encrusted Toilet By Gail Worley
The Throne

I Wonder if Damien Hirst had a hand in creating this amazing bit of bathroom bling? The 50,000 shimmering stones encrusting this lovely toilet by designer Jemal Wright aren’t real diamonds — but who cares? The toilet is forever. The artist’s other bathroom fixtures include chrome-plated porcelain and crystalline patterns hand-laid on sinks or even urinals. Your price? About $75,000.

School’s Out Forever

Continuing Education

This afternoon I had my mind completely blown by Damien Hirst ‘s installation in the lobby of the Lever House in midtown: School: The Archeology of Lost Desires, Comprehending Infinity and the Search for Knowledge. Jesus god, this exhibit is just amazing. I can understand why some people – vegetarians and animal rights activists, specifically – might be offended by its contents, but to me it was so compellingly creepy and disturbingly beautiful, I didn’t want to leave. I absolutely loved it, and I’m certain that all fans and admirers of the Nine Inch Nails’ video for “Closer” will as well.

Headmaster

School is on exhibit until February 9, 2008. I suggest you not miss the chance to experience this phenomenal work of modern art, if at all possible. See more pictures after the jump!
