Earlier this year, on a Saturday when New York was hit with a surprise heavy snowfall, I was making my way through the Chelsea galleries. Stopping in to 303 Gallery, I discovered A Sky Free From Bombs Is A Beautiful Sky, an exhibition by artist Rob Pruitt. There was something especially appropriate about encountering Pruitt’s work on a day when the sky and the light outside were constantly changing . . .
Just inside the gallery, I noticed a curious bit of information on the wall: the title of the exhibition would change every day during its run. While I didn’t get around to writing about the show before it closed, the work — and the story behind it — were simply too beautiful not to share. In retrospect, here are a selection of my photos and a look at an exhibition fascinated by one thing we can never hold onto: time.

If you’ve ever wondered what it might look like if a rainbow decided to go full-on femme fatale, look no further than this stunning modern chandelier I spotted inside a chic accessories boutique called (wait for it ) — A Little Pink! Cascading from the ceiling like a frozen firework, the fixture is composed of hundreds of crystal droplets that shift dramatically from clear at the top to a saturated, electric pink at the center — like a gemstone thundercloud gathering strength.

Cory Archangel explores the expressive potential of consumer software. With Photoshop Gradient and Smudge Tool Demonstration (2007 – 2023) he foregrounds Photoshop’s gradient tool, which fades one color into another. These two works, made 15 years apart, were created using similar commands. The contrast between the gestural dynamism of the earlier version and the minimalist geometry of its later counterpart reveals a trend towards reduction and simplification – contradicting common assumptions about technological advancement.
