RIP Led Zeppelin

Best. Band. Ever.

On This Date, July 7th in 1980: Led Zeppelin performed their last concert with their original lineup at the Eissporthalle in West Berlin, Germany. Coincidentally, twelve years earlier on his very date, Jimmy Page’s former band, The Yardbirds, broke up, which paved the way for Page to form Zeppelin. I am going to load some Led Zeppelin tunes onto my iPod right now! Led Zeppelin!

Happy Birthday, Ringo Starr!

Ringo on drums

Former Beatles’ Drummer Ringo Starr celebrates his Birthday today, July 7th (having been born in 1940). He will not be signing any autographs. A lot people know that Ringo met his current wife, Barbara Bach, while they were filming the 1981 movie Caveman (which I actually saw in the theater back in the Stone Age). But if you really want to see Starr pretend to act, you simply must see him in the role of Youngman Grand alongside the great Peter Sellers in The Magic Christian, which is just beyond brilliant. Great soundtrack by the band Badfinger as well! Happy Birthday, Ringo!

Happy Birthday Wishes to Ringo Starr!

July 7, 2007 is supposed to be the luckiest day this year, so what a great day to have a birthday! Not only was Beatles‘ drummer Ringo Starr born on this date in 1940, but today is also the anniversary of birth for skater Michelle Kwan, classical composer Gustav Mahler and comic Jim Gaffigan. Have a lucky Birthday all you fierce Cancer people out there!

RIP Syd Barrett

“Arnold Layne…had a strange hobby…”

Original Pink Floyd Guitarist and front man, Roger ‘Syd’ Barret, has passed away on July 7th, 2006, at age 60 due to complications from diabetes. In his obituary for the NY Times rock journalist John Pareles writes that Barrett, “was also renowned both as an LSD casualty and as a symbol of how close creativity can be to madness.” Read more of that resonant obit at this link: Syd Barret Dies at 60. Shine On, You Crazy Diamond.
