I’ve been following the career of Seattle-based pop artist Mike Leavitt since before I owned a digital camera and had to swipe photos for this website off the internet — which is something that takes too long to talk about. As one of my favorite contemporary artists, Leavitt possesses a remarkable gift for creating small-scale, hyper-realistic sculptures of renowned artists, political figures and celebrities and creating mash-ups that collide with his pop culture obsessions. The folks at FCTRY, who’ve been turning cultural and political icons into action figures since 2008, are adding a gorgeous Nancy Pelosi Acton Figure to their already impressive line of progressive heroes that includes RBG, Biden, AOCSanders and Hillary (which I own) among many others. Must See Art: Michael Leavitt’s Empire Peaks

File this one under “Must See Art” because you won’t want to miss Michael Leavitt’s latest exhibit at Jonathan Levine Gallery, entitled Empire Peaks. Continuing with the theme he did to perfection with Art Army Royalty back in 2011, Leavitt’s latest collection of  what could loosely be called pop culture action figures takes a Star Wars theme and turns that wildly popular franchise’s characters into recognizable icons of history, politics and entertainment. The show is totally off the hook! Even if you’re not  a total Star Wars geek  (raises hand) you’re going to enjoy the high-quality representations of some very recognizable individuals, both real and fictional.
