The Monokini (1964) was Rudi Gernreich’s swimsuit of the future. The topless design was controversial, making it difficult to find a model willing to be photographed wearing it. Ultimately, only one image of the suit (taken from behind) was published, in Look magazine. At the urging of look editor, Suzanne Kirtland, a wider selection of images appeared in Women’s Wear Daily and later, in Life, where many American readers took note. The Burkini is an amalgamation of two different garments: the Burqa, a garment covering the face and body worn by Muslim women, and the two-piece Bikini bathing suit. Australian designer Aheda Zanetti designed the Burkini — trademarking it as the Burqini — in the early 2000’s to help her niece participate in school sports and beach culture, while adhering to Islamic modesty tenets.
Ouch! Talk about a conversation piece on the beach! The Sharkini one piece swim suit by Bad Aby Designs is made to order and sells for $100 (rush orders are available for an additional $50). Features include leatherette “teeth” trim and one chain strap, with molded foam bust cups sewn in. With the turn around time at approximately 3-4 weeks (based on their current volume of orders) it’s almost too late in the summer to get this rad suit in time for Beach season, at least here in NY, but there’s always next year!
