Christopher Lee’s portrayal of Dracula in Hammer Horror films became iconic for several reasons. Lee’s version of the character, debuting in Dracula (1958), broke away from the aristocratic elegance of earlier portrayals, notably Bela Lugosi’s, and introduced a darker, more intense vampire. Lee’s Dracula was seductive yet violent, blending charisma with genuine menace. His tall, imposing figure, piercing stare, and deep voice gave Dracula a commanding presence, while his bloodshot eyes and fanged smile became lasting visual symbols of horror.

Many of you already know that we lost comic actor Joe Flaherty on April 1, 2024 at the age of 82. Flaherty was a prolific actor with a long career, but the role that most endeared him to me was that of  Count Floyd, vampire host of Monster Chiller Horror Theatre, a parody of horror movie shows on the Canadian sketch comedy television show SCTV (Second City Television).

If you enjoyed Netflix’s cannibal-themed comedy series, The Santa Clarita Diet, but just wish it featured more of the erotic sexual violence seen in the 2001 thriller Trouble Every Day, while also dishing up a plot that is more deeply-steeped in body horror, dark family secrets, and general fucked-up-edness, a new French horror film, Raw, may satisfy that craving. Raw, the debut feature film from director Julia Ducournau, tells the unconventional coming-of-age story of Justine, a pretty but sheltered teen who is starting her freshman year at veterinary college.
