Although it wasn’t on my list for that day’s art crawl, I was drawn into the Andrea Rosen Gallery by a glimpse of one of Josiah McElheny’s “Paintings” as seen from the street. These works instantly reminded me of the hyper-realist Jewel Paintings of Damien Hirst, so I was fascinated right away. To better convey what these paintings are all about, I’ve borrowed some text taken from the exhibit’s official press release.
There’s a lot going on to both look at and think about in The Temptation To Exist (May Contain Nuts) – Friedrich Kunath’s fourth solo exhibit now up at the Andrea Rosen Gallery – in that the exhibit is made up of three distinct series of works.
There are times when it’s very easy for me to speak about and describe the art I’ve seen, and other times when I feel it’s best to just let the art do the talking. The latter is how I feel after seeing David Altmejd’s latest exhibit, currently at the Andrea Rosen Gallery in Chelsea. Not only is the scale of the artworks so overwhelming as to be almost inexplicable, but these sculptures have so much going on within, and without, them that I really do feel experiencing this exhibit in person is the only way to really “get it.”
