Well, the summer is over and the Chelsea Galleries are back in full swing with lots of exciting art to see. One of our long-time favorites, the Claire Oliver Gallery, has a new show up that is not only beautiful to look at but which also deals with a subject that is very topical.

In Cash is King, artist Lisa Alonzo revitalizes a long standing tradition of depicting currency and its role in our visual culture. Alonzo uses her signature satirical voice to pose questions on our current economic climate in a postmodern context.

To create these works, Lisa Alonzo uses a pastry bag filled with acrylic paint with which she lays down a series of dots and dashes, fine crosshatched lines and scrollwork, mimicking the look of an engraver’s printing plate.

Intermingled with the political figure’s portraits are bits of now-worthless banknotes, such as this 25 Billion Dollar note from Zimbabwe.

In the above piece, the notes are cut and arranged into colorful diamond shaped designs: monopoly money laced with devalued currencies from around the world are reduced to decoration. Alonzo’s fascination with America’s commodity culture and the significance of the contradictions of our chosen leaders is recontextualized in the current climate.

Here are a few of our favorite pieces from the show:

United States of Bacon to Premiere on December 30th, 2012

From the Huffington Post:

It was only a matter of time before there was a television series devoted to bacon. Bacon fiends should start setting their DVRs because the Destination America channel, owned by Discovery, will premiere United States Of Bacon on December 30th at 10:00 and 10:30 PM.

The series follows California Chef Todd Fisher for 12 episodes (he also hosted Destination America’s United States Of Food) as he travels across America in search of the tastiest bacon dishes. In the first episode, Fisher samples a chunky peanut butter bacon cheeseburger, checks out a daily bacon happy hour, eats a garbage platter with five kinds of meat and then has some bacon-wrapped meatloaf and bacon cheddar apple pie. The second episode brings even more gluttony including deep-dish pizza and a triple-decker BLT.

Destination America has partnered with BaconFreak.com so viewers can get special deals on bacon-related merchandise.

This new TV show reminds us of the bacon barter stunt a few months ago, when comedian Josh Sankey traveled around the country using bacon as currency. We can’t help but wonder where bacon is headed next — a feature-length film?

Dr. Rockso On the Dollar Bill!

Someone with a sense of humor, a slight artistic bent and a love of Metalocalypse drew the face of Dr. Rockso, the Rock & Roll Clown (he does Cocaine) on a dollar bill. So, it gets to be on my blog. Because it is awesome.
