Food Glorious Fancy Food: the most-anticipated annual food show is now behind us, and I must say that nobody has their act together quite like the Specialty Food Association does when they take over the Javits Center for the annual Summer Fancy Food Show here in NYC. Cheese whiz, what a fantastic show!
There is so much ground to cover when attempting to distill the Summer Fancy Food Experience, and it’s a monumental task because, as the largest show of its kind, there are literally thousands of participating exhibitors! This year, I was fancying a wide variety of sweet treats and snacks. Let’s go to the photos!
Mmm, don’t these look delicious? C’est Gourmet makes exceptional artisanal pastries – in both sweet and savory varieties – that arrive frozen so that customers can bake fresh pastries at home easily and conveniently. C’est Gourmet selects only the finest ingredients, including organic fruit and artisan cheeses, and they have mastered their own European methods of laminating and resting dough, which results in flavorful pastries with crispy, flaky texture, and a memorable eating experience. C’est Gourmet’s newest offering is the Croissant Muffin (pictured above). I could eat a dozen of them!
Bakerly Crepes To Go are authentic French Crepes rolled with delicious fillings and packaged individually for bakery-fresh, grab-and-go snacking! I discovered Bakerly crepes a few years ago and they are now one of my very favorite snacks! Fillings inside each impossibly flaky crepe include Chocolate Hazelnut, Crunchy Chocolate Hazelnut, Crunchy Caramel, and Strawberry. Take one bite and you will understand immediately why Bakerly’s website is loaded with glowing five-star reviews of these extremely yummy crepe treats!!
Sugar Bowl Bakery makes tiny snack-sized cakes that are instantly addictive, but my favorites are their Duet Bites.
Duet Bites are two treats in one, combining a luscious almond-flavored Madeleine cake and a moist chocolate Brownie in one tiny cake. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
Post Continues With More Photos and Brands After The Jump!
Cheers to the Chopin Vodka Booth (All Photos By Gail)
For Foodies and Food Writers alike, the change of seasons brings on excitement for holiday foods and ideas for entertaining! It also means that it’s time for Fall Food Fete, a great event to sample new products and get in the mood to celebrate. Here are few of our favorite products from the show, which took place on October 27th!
One of the first things we always do once we check in for the show is grab a cocktail from the bar! In this case, it was a refreshing and delicious Chocolate Martini, made with Dorda Double Chocolate Liqueur and Chopin Vodka, a featured exhibitor at the show. Made with artisanal small-batch craftsmanship, the award winning Chopin — named after the famous Polish romantic composer Frederic Chopin (“Sho-Pan”) — is family owned and crafted from the most traditional vodka ingredients. In a word: Smooth!
Show attendees received miniature sample bottles of Chopin’s Potato, Rye and Wheat Vodkas to take home and enjoy! Find out more at Chopin Vodka Dot Com!
Other featured spirits included luxury wines from Paul Mas, Rutini and Vina Zaco. Remember: for those who indulge, alcohol makes a great gift!
Coney Island Brewing Company was also a bar sponsor for the event. Friendly representatives provided generous tastings of some of the brand’s unique craft beers including their Mermaid Pilsner, Overpass IPA, Coney Island Lager, 1609 Amber Ale and their most recently launched Hard Root Beer — which is amazing!
It is too bad that summer is already behind us, because Hard Root Beer is the summer-vibe beverage of the year! Find out more about Coney Island Brewing Company and their fine beverages at This Link!
At their busy booth, the National Potato Board partnered with popular Caterer and Event Planner Mary Giuliani to showcase cocktail party food ideas featuring the fabulous Potato!
Food Fete attendees were treated to a Hash Browns bar with their choice of toppings — an easy and fun party dish!
A lidded mason jar made it easy to add the toppings of your choice to the potatoes and then shake it all up to mix the flavors!
Mary, who is lovely, signed copies of her exciting new book The Cocktail Party (Love, Mary) — a must-have guide to all facets of holiday entertaining! There are those who experience discomfort and digestive issues when consuming milk, and easily assume that they are lactose intolerant. However, A2 Milk Company believes that may not always be true: in many cases, Post-Dairy Digestive Discomfort (PD3) may actually caused by the A1 Protein found in cow’s milk.
Milk is made up of different proteins, including the A1 and A2 proteins. Studies show that these two proteins digest quite differently from each other and, for some people, the presence of the A1 protein can result in the discomfort after drinking milk which may be mistaken for lactose intolerance. At the A2 Milk Company, cows are specially selected and produce fresh milk containing only the A2 protein, and no A1 protein. As a result, many more people can enjoy the nutritional benefits, and delicious taste, of fresh real milk. At Food Fete, A2 Milk Company not not only gave away cute little cows, but also sample bottles of their delicious milk, which tastes like absolutely nothing is missing! This is great news, just in time for cookies and milk season! Find out more about A2 Milk Company at This Link!

Snack Cakes were a popular item at the show, including one of our favorite brands, Entenmann’s. We had the chance to taste a few of their new products including Rich Frosted Patriotic Donuts (which we hear makes a killer ice cream sandwich), flaunting Red, White and Blue Sprinkles! Also new to this family of quality baked goods are Soft’ees French Toast Donuts, which have already inspired the recipe for a Bacon, Egg and Cheese Breakfast Sandwich that sounds insanely delicious.
And we are singing the praises of Entenmann’s new Party Cake Little Bites! This tiny morsel of moist yellow cake with rainbow sprinkles mixed in is one of the tastiest things you can put in your mouth! Find out more about these new Entenmann’s products at This Link!

Teddy Grahams tiny Bear-shaped cookies are a much loved thing, and just when you thought there was no way to improve on perfection, you can now buy them with Rainbow Sprinkles baked right in! Festive! Surely both kids and adult adults alike will go crazy for these. In fact, we left the event with two full boxes of Birthday Cake Teddy Grahams, one of which we shared with our coworkers the following day, and these cookies had disappeared within an hour! This might also have had something to do with the fact that they smell like Birthday Cake, a tempting aroma that few can resist. Birthday Cake Teddy Grahams are available just in time for back-to-school, so be sure and check This Link to see when they’ve arrived at a store near you.

True story: back in high school, even being in possession of a pack of crunchy, buttery Mauna Loa Macadamia Nuts was a status symbol that automatically elevated you into the ranks of the Cool Kids. Just being serious. Granted, this was over 35 years ago, so we have no idea if they still carry that kind of clout. But the fact that the brand is still going strong is surely a good sign!
Eating Macadamia nuts makes you feel like you’re in Hawaii, and everybody loves Hawaii. Enjoy a tribal, Enchanted Tiki Room-esque song about Macadamia Nuts, and learn more about Mauna Loa products, at This Link!

Speaking of healthy, natural beverages, it doesn’t get much better for you than pure, delicious water! Gerolsteiner is a premium sparkling mineral water, which has the proud distinction of being the most popular mineral water in Germany — and you know how much we love the Germans! Here’s a bit of the fascinating backstory on Gerolsteiner, which originates from a region in Germany known as the Volcanic Eifel that possesses unique geological character.
Thanks to the special combination of carbonic acid from prehistoric volcanic activity, and dolomite rock — known for its rich mineral content — a Mineral Water of the highest quality evolves. As the water finds its way through the various layers of rock, every drop of Gerolsteiner becomes naturally carbonated. This is an important process, as the carbonic acid allows the water to absorb the precious minerals and trace elements from the dolomite rock. Fascinating! We sampled a bottle of chilled Gerolsteiner and it is indeed very heavily carbonated with a clean, refreshing taste. We think it would be ideal also for making natural sodas by adding a syrup like Ribena! Get hip to Gerolsteiner at This Link!
(Note: the Popularity of the Humble Coconut as a Booth Decoration)

Food, Glorious Food Fête! Our favorite quarterly food trade show and media networking show packed the cozy Helen Mills Event Space in Chelsea on February 24th with booths showcasing sixteen innovative products ranging from Premium Organic Jarred Tomatoes to Gluten-Free Shortbread Cookies, and Vegan Meat Substitutes — all every exciting! Here are a few of our favorite products from the show!
The first booth we came to when we entered the show was Plum Organics — a company focusing on the nutritional needs and often finicky appetites of babies and children. Their huge display extended possibly three booth spaces, and with good reason: these folks had a lot of cool products to present! It was a chilly night and Plum Organics helped warm everyone up with their hearty and delicious Tomato and Turkey Meatball Soup.
You can see that this soup is packed with lots of tiny, ground turkey meatballs for a savory and satisfying meal that kids (and adults) will devour!
Go Bars, in tempting flavors like Chocolate Brownie and Pumpkin Banana, make a healthy after-school snack!
Plum Vida is an organic, squeezable fruit and veggie blend snack created by the women of Plum, and is the company’s first product specifically for adults. At only 70 – 90 calories, with 3 grams of fiber per resealable pouch, Plum Vida is an ideal on-the-go snack. Find out more about the fine products of Plum Organics at This Link!
Imagine how sad it would be if you had to eliminate delicious butter from your diet due to being lactose intolerant. I don’t even want to go there. Thank goodness that Challenge Dairy has actually created “Lactose Free” Spreadable Butter, which tastes just as awesome as the real thing! This new and exciting product is enhanced with fine olive oil to maintain a smooth texture without sacrificing any rich flavor. Amazing! Challenge also debuted two new flavors of their Soft Cream Cheese Spread: Strawberry — flavored and sweetened only with fresh ripe strawberries with no sugar added — and Salsa Flavor, made with an assortment of fresh garden vegetables. Both of these cream cheese spreads were crazy delicious and perfect for snacking or serving at your next party!
Also, they were giving away Free Cows! Fall in love with the wonderful products of Challenge Dairy at This Link!
Muir Glen Organic Jarred Tomatoes make cooking all of your favorite tomato recipes — from soups and stews to sauces and pizza — so easy! Using only California-grown tomatoes, Muir Glen offers four unique varieties of prepared tomatoes including the sweet and smokey Diced Fire Roasted Red Tomatoes, San Marzano Style Plum Tomatoes (perfect for Italian cooking), Arabella Tomatoes, and Crushed Tomatillos (Green Tomatoes), which are so versatile especially in the preparation of Mexican Cuisine!
I brought a jar home so I can make a vat of my famous homemade chili! Get recipes and more information by visiting Muir Glen Dot Com!
Bailys Coffee Creamers bring the beloved, classic flavor of Bailys Irish Cream Liqueur to your morning coffee, but without the alcohol! Who needs Starbucks when you have this product in your pantry? We also had a chance to sample tasty Macadamia Brittle cupcakes made from a recipe incorporating Bailys Creamers! Master of MixesBloody Mary Mix kept the atmosphere festive by offering a custom Bloody Mary Bar featuring the Classic, Loaded, and 5 Pepper varieties of mix, each with varying level of heat to match you taste! It was nice to see a selection fresh fruit and produce sharing the stage with packaged and prepared foods, and the California Giant Berry Farms booth did not disappoint! Their brightly-colored, attention-grabbing display of fresh strawberries and blueberries were showcased as the featured ingredient in two very original recipes. What you see up front is fresh Strawberry Salsa (perfectly accompanied by crisp, salty tortilla strips) which is made using Strawberries, Red Onion, Jalapeno and Cilantro and spices, with no tomatoes at all! This was probably the most delicious fresh salsa I have ever tasted – get the recipe at the link below!
They also offered plates of fresh baked, insanely moist Blueberry Brownies that take this popular dessert to an entirely different level. Find out more about California Giant Berry Farms and get a ton of creative recipes by clicking over to Cal Giant Dot Com.
Unless you live a cave, you have to be familiar with the classic Walkers Shortbread cookies — which are phenomenal. I wouldn’t have thought there was a way to improve on this popular treat, but Walkers has manged to maintain their shortbread’s outrageously buttery taste in a new gluten-free recipe that substitutes wheat flour for a blend of rice flour, maize flour and potato starch! The new, certified gluten-free line includes three new flavors: Shortbread Rounds, Ginger & Lemon Shortbread and Chocolate Chip Shortbread — which I think are the best tasting and highest quality packaged Chocolate Chip cookies you can buy in a store.
Sunset Produce featured a variety of their fresh packaged tomatoes for sampling and also had one of the most naturally colorful booths at the show!
Founded sixty years ago by a pioneer in the commercial greenhouse industry, Sunset is still family owned, and operated with great passion for growing and selling world-class tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. With over a dozen varieties on offer, you are not going to get bored of tasting and cooking with these fantastic fruits. We came home with some free samples as well! Find out more about Sunset Produce at Sunset Grown Dot Com.

Winning my personal award for possessing the Best Brand Name Ever, Food Should Taste Good brand makes non-GMO, gluten-free snacks and chips that, well, taste terrific! Founder Pete Lescoe created Food Should Taste Good, Inc in 2006 with the goal of making a unique new snack with great taste, real ingredients, and sophisticated flavor – the qualities he is most passionate about in food. FSTG’sMultiGrain Tortilla Chips — which we sampled at Food Fete — are absolutely habit forming and practically guilt-free at zero grams of fat!
They’ve also introduced a brand new product, Pinto BeanandBlack Bean MultiGrain Chips! These bean-based chips are also made with Flax, Sesame and Sunflower Seeds plus Quinoa for a true MutiGrain experience in a tasty snack chip. See a full list of FSTG Chips at This Link!
Inspired by an authentic Australian recipe, Yulu Yogurt is double smoothed – and I do not know that means, exactly, but what I can tell you is that it tastes fantastic. Yulu has a texture and consistency that more closely resembles pudding than yogurt, which I think makes for a more highly desirable mouth feel.
At Food Fete, Yulu offered a “Make Your Own” Toppings Bar and I created this delicious little snack for myself with a couple of fresh raspberries and a sprinkle of sweet chocolate shavings on top of their Vanilla flavor yogurt. It was the most delicious thing. Yulu also has 9 grams of protein per serving, so it is a good snack for between meals. Click over to Yulu Yogurt Dot Com to find out more, get coupons and store information, plus be eligible for giveaways! Yay for Yulu!
Horizon Dairy is a company we already love for its family of delicious organic products. Horizon’s new Fruit Crunchers snack is a great on-the-go treat and can even be used to top sundaes or fruit salads.
I threw these Toasted Coconut Crunchers on top of my Yulu Yogurt and they made it taste extra special! Fruit Crunchers also come in Apple and are made with 100% real fruit with no artificial ingredients. Visit Horizon Dairy on the web at This Link!
While we do not at all considered Meat to be a four letter word, we are always open to vegetarian and vegan options when it comes to tasty proteins and meat substitutes. Tuscan Savory Grounds: Italian Spicy Sausage flavor in a meatless, ground meat-emulating product! Savory Grounds also come in Chipotle, and Barbecue flavors, so your meatless recipe options are nearly limitless!
Recipe Ready Seitan: The “Wheat Meat” comes in a variety of tasty, pre-seasoned flavors including Curry, Chipotle and also traditional flavor. Hail Seitan!

The Ambrosia Apples Booth Gets A Bonus Shout-Out for Having the Most Beautiful Display at the 2015 Health and Nutrition Editor Showcase! (All Photos By Gail)
Despite the fierce winter chill, Food Bloggers and Journalists flocked to the Marriott Marquis in Times Square last week for the first Editor Showcase event of the year. Even with the show’s focus on the theme of Health and Nutrition, we were surprised and pleased to see such a variety of fresh foods and produce mixed in with the usual offerings of (albeit delicious) yogurt, chips and gluten-free products that are the staples of most food shows. Here are a few of our favorite products from the show!
Here’s a couple of product that home bakers will rejoice over: King Arthur brand Almond Flour and Coconut Flour. Based in Vermont, King Arthur is America’s oldest flour company and their dedication to innovation in the realm of baking ingredients, recipes, tools and educational opportunities unparalleled.
Since EDsmart is official to one of these organizations, check both websites to determine whether or not your application is approved.
With the rise in popularity of gluten-free consciousness, these flours are absolutely ideal and they make everything you bake taste like it came from the fanciest bakery in town. We know, because look at the delicious treats they brought to the show:
That chocolate cake you see in the photo above? It was just insane. Be a Baking Superstar and find out more about King Arthur Flour at This Link!
A new product that intrigued us is Appethyl, an all-natural, vegetable-based appetite suppressant that may be just what you are looking for to help you take off that extra 5 pounds you put on over the holidays (raises hand). Made from 100% spinach, Appethyl is patented and clinically tested (very important).
Appethyl increases the body’s feeling of fullness by slowing down its absorption of fat and glucose. The product comes in easy to use, individually wrapped packets, so there is no measuring involved. You can take a few packets with you on the go, to your office to wherever. Just mix the Appethyl powder in with soup, a smoothie, or a drink with your meal, and you have a convenient, safe and effective way to curb cravings. Find out more at This Link!
Over the holidays, I was introduced to Blue Diamond Nut-Thins crackers and fell completely in love with their terrific taste and seductive crispiness. The Almond Nut-Thins taste like delicious popcorn, so good! Just add a bit of cheese or salami and you have the most delicious snack you can imagine. Good enough for company, even!
Blue Diamond is a trusted brand name everyone should be familiar with for their quality almonds and almond products. But did you know that the 105-year old cooperative is owned half the state of California’s almond growers, who produce over 80 percent of the world’s almond supply? Wow! No wonder they know what they’re doing.
At Editor showcase, we not only had a chance to try bold new almond favors – such as Wasabi Soy Sauce and Habanero BBQ – but we also sampled the brand’s tasty non-dairy, almond milk beverage, which is called Almond Breeze. Find out more about Blue Diamond’s exciting line of products at This Link!
Lundberg Family Farms are famous for their sustainable rice farming practices that conserve water resources, build soil integrity and support a healthier ecosystem. And doesn’t it feel good to support a company that makes delicious foods while also taking care of the Earth? Sure it does!
Lundberg has just introduced a line of packaged Whole Grain Quinoa and RiceSide Dishes in a variety of savory flavors. These healthy and convenient sides offer the perfect complement to any homemade meal.
Rice Cake fans should also check out Lundberg’sThin Stackers, which pack a burst of nutty, whole grain flavor into a rice cake that is compressed for a denser and more satisfying bite than most. At the show, we were invited to add our own toppings from a Rice Cake bar, and I made this little snack, topped with with peanut butter and banana chips, which I call the Elvis Rice Cake! Please also note the rice cake’s square shape, which is awesome.
Luna Bars are a healthy snack bar geared specifically towards the nutritional needs of Women. Luna is the perfect on-the-go-snack; being both nutritious and deliciously decadent!
The Lemon Zest variety was my favorite, with its appealing balance of tartness and sweetness and a creamy/ crunchy texture combination. Luna Bars are gluten free, a good source of protein and are made with 70% organic ingredients, while also offering 3-4 grams of fiber per bar! Find out more about Luna Bars at This Link!
And here we are, circling back with Ambrosia Apples, whose booth enthusiastically embraced the essence of spring by including several varieties of fresh flowers, cheerful product reps dressed in keenly accented, coordinated outfits (not pictured) and lots of these gorgeous, fragrant apples to sample and learn about.
Ambrosia is a relative newcomer on the American-grown apple landscape, after being discovered as a chance seedling in an orchard in British Columbia, Canada. The taste reminded me a bit of a Golden Delicious apple, with creamy flesh and a sweet, honey-like flavor. The flesh is also slow to brown, which makes it ideal for baking. Find out more about this, versatile, tasty, non-GMO fruit at This Link!
Good Natured Selects is introducing two varieties of their new Baked Vegetable Crisps: regular and Ranch (which are lightly dusted with a ranch dressing seasoning). These light and crispy chips have a wonderful vegetable taste with the appealing texture of a Ruffles Ridged Potato Chip — which, you know, makes them good for dipping!
All Good Natured Selects products are gluten-free, made with no artificial ingredients or added preservatives and contain zero grams of fat. But what’s most important is that they taste great! Find out more about Good Natured Selects Baked Vegetable Crisps and other products at This Link!
When I think of Wonderful Brands, I remember how they managed to license Psy’s ridiculously popular “Gangnam Style” for a commercial about their line of Pistachios, with the tagline “Get Crackin’ ” — because that was just brilliant. Wonderful Brands also represents a variety of fresh produce, and at Editor Showcase they were showing off their delicious Sweet Scarlett’s Texas Red Grapefruits as well as their Halos Mandarin Oranges, in addition to a variety of their more popular flavors of pistachios, such as Sweet Chili and, my favorite, Salt and Pepper!
Wonderful Brands is, in fact, the fastest-growing brand in America’s produce aisles and has become a trusted household name for delicious nuts and fruits that not only tastes great but are also a smart, healthy choice for use in recipes for everyday snacking. Get more information about Wonderful Brands at This Link!
You’ve read about the Lifeway Brand Kefir beverages and snacks here on The Gig before, and it is always a pleasure to see what they have to offer in the way of new products. These drinks are not too sweet, and are perfect to take on-the-go, or for a satisfying afternoon snack. Their newest variety contains oats as well – which makes it ideal for a quick, convenient breakfast! Find out more and sign up to receive money saving coupons from Lifeway at This Link!
It was fun to see the National Onion Association team up with U.S. Apples for a shared booth that was all about not only the great taste. versatility and health benefits of each variety of produce, but also provided some fantastic recipes using both products, and samples of some tasty recipes, such as Apple Onion Jam, and other treats combining the flavors of each.
The Skinnygirl Daily brand has expanded far beyond its ambitious Margarita Mix beginnings to now include a line of Tasty Nutrition Bars in decadent flavors like Banana Oatmeal Dark Chocolate, Dark Chocolate Multi-Grain Pretzel and Chocolate Peanut Butter with Sea Salt, each containing only 150 – 170 calories per bar. Not that anyone needs to advertise to get me to eat eggs — because eggs are awesome — but hey, free Deviled Eggs are always a good thing! As part of the American Egg Board, the Incredible Edible EggTM offers information to consumers about all things eggs, including recipes, cooking techniques, nutritional benefits and much more. The Egg Nutrition Center, also part of the American Egg Board, serves as a credible source of nutrition and health science information and is the knowledge leader in research and education related to eggs. Egg-citing!
We also enjoyed snacking on these Deviled Green Eggs and Ham — which were actually more of a turquoise color — topped with bits of bacon. And…
Mexican Deviled Eggs with Chorizo, yummy!
That wraps up this Editor Showcase Recap. Until next time, snack healthy!
