I passed this ad in the subway a couple of times before I was sure that it incorporates the original art of Jeff Soto, and wasn’t just made to look like a copy of his art. A little Googling on this end revealed that, as part of the next phase of its Play with OREO campaign, the company commissioned 10 emerging artists from around the globe “to see what happens when you put a 100+ year old brand into the hands of creative visionaries who are known for pushing the boundaries, and ask them to develop and share creative OREO expressions of play through their art forms.” The artists who worked on the project include Soto, Brosmind, Alex Trochut, Geoff McFetridge, Craig + Karl, Andrew Bannecker, Ryan Todd, Shotopop, Andy Rementer, and MCBESS.
The great news for people suffering from food allergies and dietary intolerances these days is that there is an exponentially growing market of specialty food products that cater to those who can’t eat dairy, nuts, gluten, soy and a laundry list of other ingredients. Hallelujah! I’m fortunate that I can eat just about anything I want, but I taste test and review a variety of specialty products for the blog. Sometimes, say with a brand like Better 4U Gluten Free Pizza, the product is just as flavorful and delicious as its non-restricted ingredient counterpart. Other time,s the specialty product might fall short in a head-to-head comparison. Such is the case with So Delicious Brand Dairy-Free Frozen Almond Milk Dessert.
I recently consumed, over the course of several days, the contents of a small container of So Delicious Brand Dairy Free Frozen Almond Milk Dessert, Cookies ‘N’ Cream variety. Was it a tasty thing? Yes, I would say so. I enjoyed eating it, but I feel like it would be dishonest of me to not call out a major claim made by So Delicious Dairy Free with regard to their product.
It is true that all of So Delicious almond milk products are soy-free, gluten-free, and Non-GMO Product Verified. They are also naturally lower in fat and calories than dairy-based frozen desserts. But with respect to their website’s claim that, “So Delicious Dairy Free Almond Milk frozen desserts are so smooth and creamy (emphasis mine), you’ll never miss dairy ice cream again,” my reflexive response is, “Yeah, I doubt that.”
“Creamy” is not a word I would ever use to describe this product in any way. And, trust me, there is no chance that anyone who has a memory of ever having tasted ice cream would confuse the two products. The best thing about this frozen dessert is that it has a very generous amount of Oreo Cookie chunks mixed into the product.
Bottom line: So Delicious Brand Dairy Free Frozen Almond Milk Dessert is an enjoyable, quality product for anyone whose dietary restrictions will not allow them to eat real ice cream. But don’t buy it thinking you won’t be able to tell the difference, because you will definitely be disappointed.
