Toy Fair, held annually at NYC’s Javits Center, is one of the largest and most exciting toy industry trade shows in the world. It’s where toy manufacturers, buyers, and industry professionals come together to showcase and discover the latest in toys, games, collectibles, and licensing trends.  Toy Fair is a dream event for anyone who loves toys, pop culture, and creative product design, though it’s traditionally a trade-only event and therefore not open to the general public). Bummer for you!

Fortunately, I was able to snag a press badge this year and make my inaugural visit, where I had an amazing time! Toy Fair runs for four days (four days!) but my busy social calendar only allowed me one day at the show. This meant that I had a lot of ground to cover, but I made the most those seven or eight hours.  Let’s check out some of my favorite finds!

Sweet Cats Bubble Tea and Claw Machines is Asian-inspired dessert cafe which I am told specializes in “plush toys and desserts in colorful gift boxes.” There’s one on East 17th Street that opened recently and I walked by it just this week. In addition to serving ice cream and bubble tea, the cafe is crammed with a variety of colorful and dazzling claw prize machines, because you need more cute stuff to spend your money on.

Peeking At You! All Photos By Gail

In a previous life, I spent ten or so years in the world of architecture and interior design, which is where I first became acquainted with the Canstruction competition. Canstruction involves  teams of design industry professionals who conceive and build amazingly creative structures made entirely from cans of food. Sponsored by an eponymous international hunger relief charity, Canstruction sources donations of millions of pounds of food for local food banks through annual events across the country.  At the end of each competition, all the food is donated to a local food bank, such as NYC’s City Harvest.  In 2020, the event was canceled due to Covid, but his year, the completed structures were back on public display from November 4th to 15th at the Brookfield Place mall in Battery Park City. I’m happy to report I was able to check them out in person. Let’s take a look at the inspired competition from the 2021 Canstruction NYC!

Video Clip of The Week: The Griswolds “Red Tuxedo”

This song reminds me of going to Prom if Prom had been a halfway decent memory for me. See how many pop culture icons you can spot in this lovely and whimsical video by The Griswolds for their very sweetly romantic and nostalgia inducing song, “Red Tuxedo.” Find out more about The Griswolds at their FaceBook page, found at This Link! Yes, it Exists: Pikachu Kindergarten School Bus

Gotta Catch a Bus!

I never had to take the bus in grade school as we lived just two blocks from the school. Suburbia! But the school bus did always seem like it might be kind of scary for little kids to ride: especially for kindergartners, many of whom are just learning to handle being separated from their moms for the first time in their lives. Scary! A school district in Osaka, Japan solved this separation anxiety problem by customizing the traditional yellow school bus to resemble a cheerful Pikachu – the most popular of all the Pokemon! Who wouldn’t like to ride this bus? School is fun!
