I took this photo this past Thursday night, of a large scale print representation of the Damien Hirst sculpture For The Love of God, displayed in the window of DTR Modern Galleries (458 West Broadway) in Soho. It is not a great photo, due to the high glare off the shop window, but I just love this work so much, I had to put it up.

Must See Art: Mark Kostabi at Martin Lawrence Galleries

All Art By Mark Kostabi, All Photos By Gail
Our first post-Sandy art excursion turned out to be the party of the week, as modern/contemporary painter Mark Kostabi debuted a series of colorful new works at the Martin Lawrence Galleries in Soho. The red wine flowed freely (more about that later) last evening, as the gallery quickly filled with friends and fans of Kostabi, all excited to see the artist’s latest series of visually engaging paintings done in his signature style.

Georgetown Cupcake Debuts in Soho!
Last evening, we dined on cupcakes and champagne — not kidding – at a festive and fancy launch party for the newest location (Prince Street in Soho) of Georgetown Cupcake, officially opening to the public on Saturday February 11, 2012. Some killjoys and curmudgeons may speculate that the Cupcake Craze is on the wane, but there is much evidence to the contrary. It seems to us that there are specialists in this niche of the baking spectrum who are just getting started in their quest to do these tiny cakes differently / better than any other bakers! Georgetown Cupcake certainly has a foothold in the realm of doing whatever it takes to bring Cupcakes to, as they say, the next level.

Fiat’s Pop Up Gallery Bids ‘Arrivederci’ to Soho
The FIATpop-up gallery in SoHo has closed its doors after hosting a run of great art events, parties and performances. Geoffrey and I were excited to celebrate its success by attending the closing night party on Saturday April 30th. The space at 18 Wooster Street (formerly the home of art gallery Deitch Projects) was a futuristic showroom of the tiny foreign cars displayed amid bitchen car-themed art, spreads of tasty Greek food and a variety of alcohol and other potent potables. We especially enjoyed the made-to-order shaved ice drenched in sour cherry syrup and vodka – lip-smacking! British soul-funk/electronica singer Jamie Lidell energized the crowd with a lively performance at 6:30 PM, followed by a DJ set by Special Disco Version featuring James Murphy and Pat Mahoney of the recently disbanded LCD Soundsystem. As expected, the place was lousy with hipsters, but G and I effectively worked the room and had a blast before heading further downtown to a Birthday party (shout out to Yvonne!) on the roof deck of a luxury building on Leonard Street. Oh, what a night!
