The most significant changes in life are often unplanned. During the pandemic lockdown, I was able to lose 10 to 12 pounds and have miraculously kept it off for the past two years. That kind of weight loss for a not-super-active woman of my age (who, let’s be honest, loves food) is a big deal.
Encouraged by this wildly unexpected accomplishment, I made some changes to my lifestyle that I wouldn’t have considered in the comfy ‘before times,’ like walking distances that are under, say, two miles, and eating salads for lunch instead cheeseburgers and fries. I’m also making smarter choices when it comes to sweet snacks, like reaching for a low sugar treat when I need a bit of an indulgence. This is probably how I ended up on radar of MiiRo, a woman-owned company making vegan-friendly, low-sugar chocolates and baking products that don’t sacrifice flavor. All good.
I recently received a sampler box of MiiRo’s most popular products for this review and it has been fun to try everything. Here’s what I received:
1 Bag of Peanut Butter Cups
1 Peanut Butter Chocolate Bar
1 White Chocolate Bar with Crispy Almond Pieces
1 Bag of Dark Chocolate Baking Chips
1 Bag of Peanut Butter Baking Chips
1 Bottle of Sugar-free Maple Syrup
Here are my findings.
Peanut Butter Cups have been one of my favorite candies since childhood, and I’m not alone in loving them. Peanut butter cups are one of the most popular candies in the US, and for good reason: they offer both sweet, delicious chocolate and protein-packed peanut butter. Win win! When you open a package of MiiRo peanut butter cups, you will notice that they don’t include a paper wrapper, for less waste and less mess. Milk chocolate is my favorite, and I found the chocolate surrounding the peanut butter center to creamy as any fine milk chocolate I’ve tasted. The peanut butter has a nice, nutty texture. You would never guess that these are low sugar, and you can definitely fool your kids with them. Best of all there’s only 4 grams of sugar in the entire bag!
Reese’s fans will go crazy for these, but the bars are pretty special as well.
I confess to being one of those people with the self-control to eat a candy bar a few sections at a time over the course of a week (if I want to). Miiro chocolate bars are scored into six 2-inch pieces, so if you’re having this as your after-dinner treat, you can make it last a few days. Two squares is actually the recommended serving (for 140 / 130 calories total). The packaging emphasizes that it’s not to be considered a low-calorie food, but it is low carb (3 g), keto friendly and vegan.
Here is what one square of the Peanut Butter Chocolate Bar (which has the peanut butter swirled through it) and the White Chocolate with Crispy Almond Pieces look like side by side.
If you are a fan of marzipan, you’ll really love the White Chocolate with Crispy Almond Pieces as it has a remarkably similar flavor profile to the European treat made from sweetened almond paste. The white chocolate is super creamy and rich-tasting, and there’s truly an almond crunch in every bite. Delicious!
Are you someone who loves to bake? Miiro has you covered with their Baking Chips that come in both Dark Chocolate and Peanut Butter varieties. These chips can be used to make any recipes that you’d use regular chips in.
The chips are sweetened with plant-based stevia, so there is no added processed sugar.
I made a batch of cookies with them and they tasted completely amazing.
If you’re someone who loves pancakes and waffles for breakfast (raises hand) then you know you’ve got to have syrup in the cupboard at all times. Miiro’s low-calorie, no-sugar-added syrup has a remarkably maple-y flavor that will fool and delight your taste buds simultaneously. Confession: I toss this in my bag when I head to my favorite diner and sneak it onto my pancakes when no one is looking!
