Commissioned by the Dallas Museum of Art in 2020, Curbed Vanity is artist Chris Schanck’s response to a work in the museum’s collection: an ornately-crafted 19th century dressing table and stool made of solid silver. Schanck made this 21st century version utilizing his signature, Alu-foil process, which combines aluminum foil and resin, alluding to the aluminum factory in his hometown of Dallas, where the young artist and his father once worked. Whether you’re already a fan or on the cusp of becoming one, get ready to be dazzled by many more of Schank’s maverick designs in the coming months as we showcase selections from Off World, the artist’s current and long-running exhibit at the Museum of Arts and Design in Manhattan. One of my favorite contemporary furniture designers is Chris Schanck, and I always look forward to seeing his latest pieces when I attend The Salon Art + Design show each fall. Schanck’s work embraces the tension between dilapidation and opulence, asking us to find unconventional beauty in the imperfect. His contribution to this year’s fair was the Stuffed Shell Chair in a copper finish. Let’s take a closer look at this beauty.
The absence of virtually all design shows for the year 2020 (Salon Art + Design, Architectural Digest Home Show, ICFF, and on and on) — which was probably my least favorite Covid cancelation — serves as the inspiration for Friedman Benda’s latest exhibit: What Would Have Been, which I visited a few weeks ago to get my design-fix on! The exhibition gives fans access to design that lost its intended platform; works shown briefly before museum doors closed or failed to open at all. A favorite piece in the gallery (and not just because it’s pink) was Chris Schank’s Grotto Mirror — which may look familiar to some readers.
What caught my eye immediately on flyers for the 2019 edition of The Salon Art + Design show was the included image of a vibrant Pink version of Chris Schanck’s Puff and Stuff Chair (2019). With it its quilted, glossy velvet upholstery and biomorphic sculptural base comprised of steel, aluminum, polystyrene, polyuria, aluminum foil and resin, the chair manages to look both organic and highly stylized simultaneously.
