This week’s Pink Thing of the Day comes from an exhibit I saw way back in 2017 by photographer Stephen Shore and his quietly captivating image Room 509, Dnipro Hotel, Kiev, Ukraine, July 18, 2012. The photograph seems almost disarmingly simple: a hotel room washed in soft pink tones, a bed neatly made, and a doorway that reveals a second room beyond. But the longer you look, the more the image unfolds. The composition layers space through that open doorway, creating a subtle narrative — two rooms, two viewpoints, and the quiet suggestion of someone just out of frame.

Circle Portal A By Keith Sonnier (All Photos By Gail)
Maccarone Gallery is currently hosting Portals, 14 new wall-mounted neon sculptures by artist Keith Sonnier. Sonnier’s by-now iconic work is emblematic of a generation of artists who sought to liberate the artistic encounter from the formal constraints of Modernism to produce a sensory and emotional experience that also extended beyond the Spartan affect of Minimalism. The category of post-Minimalism, however, does not adequately describe both the unique wit and visceral impact that Sonnier’s work displays. Near the Water Street side of the plaza at 88 Pine Street is a two-piece abstract sculpture called East West Gate, by Taiwanese artist Yu Yu Yang (1926 – 1997), consisting of a large shiny stainless steel disk standing upright next to a 16-foot-tall steel rectangle with a circular hole in it, suggesting that the disk has been cut from the rectangle.

While Lucas Samaras’s Doorway is billed as a “Mirrored Room,” it isn’t actually a room that you can enter, as you can, say, a Mirrored Room installation by Yayoi Kusama. It is really more of, well, a Doorway: a Mirrored Cube inside of a Mirrored Shell that is open on the front and back ends, to allow view through. When I viewed this work at Pace Gallery on the final day of its exhibition, the open ends were roped off to prevent anyone from touching, walking on or accessing the work close up. Bummer.
