Every picture tells a story. During his career, Photographer Barrie Wentzell collected an endless cache of unheard stories from and about many of rock’s greatest legends that would blow your head right off. From 1965 to 1975 – certainly one of the (if not the) most vibrant and fertile decades for Rock & Roll music and culture — Wentzell shot both live performance and candid, intimate photographs of everyone who was anyone: from Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles to The Kinks and Led Zeppelin for the UK weekly music rag, Melody Maker. Here’s another exhibit that we checked out on a whim during last Thursday’s very rewarding art crawl, only to have it end up as one of the highlights of the evening: Blue Jean Blues by Korean contemporary artist Kim Joon. For his newest series of digital prints, Kim uses porcelain as his digital medium, putting him at the forefront of the new-media movement. Grammy-winning, iconic guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Slash marked a career milestone today, Tuesday, July 10th, 2012, as he was honored with his own Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Slash’s star is located directly in front of the Hard Rock Café on Hollywood Blvd (6801 Hollywood Blvd, #105 Los Angeles, CA 90028). Slash’s friends — celebrated film producer Robert Evans, actor Charlie Sheen and beloved radio host Jim Ladd — were guest speakers at the fan-packed ceremony. Primarily known as a designer of custom clothing for Rock Stars, Michael Houghton has taken his love of All Things Rock into the fine art world with a series of works on canvas known simply as “The Smoking Series.” Featuring large scale canvases (36” x 36”) adorned with appropriated, iconic images of Rock legends such as Jimmy Page, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, you’ll notice that each has one thing in common: a smoldering cigarette.
