In Memorium: Remembering The Bunny Museum of Altadena, California

Nestled in the heart of Altadena, California, the Bunny Museum stood as a whimsical sanctuary dedicated to the celebration of all things rabbit. A beloved institution, it wasn’t just a museum; it was a home, a labor of love, and a testament to the boundless joy that collecting and cherishing can bring. Tragically, this haven was reduced to ashes in the recent LA wildfires — specifically the Eaton Canyon Fire, which wiped out much of Altadena — leaving behind only memories of its unparalleled charm and the countless smiles it inspired. I was lucky to have visited this wonderful collection with my sister on Christmas Eve day while in California for the holidays. I can’t believe it’s gone.

Modern Art Monday Presents: Vaughn Spann, Basking in the Wind

Artist Vaughn Spann’s figurative compositions are vivid in their palette and imagination. Brilliantly saturated canvases such as this painting  reflect the artist’s careful study of color, form, line and shape. His painted narratives, while dreamlike, are grounded in the complex realities of navigating life as a Black person. Basking  in the Wind (2019) evokes the duality of this experience with a two-headed Black figure seated next to a pair of black and white rabbits.

War (2003) by artist Paula Rego (19352022) is based on a newspaper photograph of Iraqi civilians in the aftermath of a bomb explosion during the Iraq war. Rego was shaken by the image of a mother carrying a baby, seemingly frozen in fear, and a girl screaming standing next to them.
