The World Championship of Sand Sculpting took place this year in Federal Way, Washington, beginning September 8th, with artists’ work remaining on display until October 10, 2010. The annual event, which draws competitors from around the world, took place in Canada for more than 20 years; this year marked the first time the United States served as the host country.

Too bad school is almost out, because school kids would be all over this shit. And who doesn’t love disembodied Doll Heads. I know I do. Mezco Toys has introduced a new line based on one of their most popular products – the Living Dead Dolls Pencil Toppers. Each topper is an accurate miniature recreation of your favorite Living Dead Dolls‘s head. Series one contains the disembodied heads of: Sybil, Schitzo and Sadie. Fits most common size pens and pencils (not included) and – for you completist collectors out there – each one is individually carded. My friend Debbie once had a Living Dead Doll made in her likeness and named after her. It was called Deadborah. Clever.
I don’t mind a good, vigorous hike now and again, but putting my life at risk is something I’d generally like to avoid in a hiking experience. However, if you’re a bit of a daredevil, check out this trail which has been identified as Camino Del Rey in the El Chorro gorge in southern Spain. Yeesh! No thank you! I particularly dig the groovy soundtrack music (which kicks in at about the :35 mark) accompanying this six minute video of what must surely be among the most harrowing hiking trails in existence. RIP Hilly Kristal
Former owner and founder of now-defunct pioneering rock club CBGB, Hilly Krystal, died yesterday, August 28th, 2007, of lung cancer. He was 75 years old.
I will always remember CBGB for its super scary toilets (pictured above: the Men’s Room)! At least they were not as “Trainspotting-esque” as those at The Continental!

This past Sunday night, a few of my more rock-savvy friends went downtown to the place where Bleecker Street meets The Bowery for the final concert performance at CBGB before that legendary club closed for good. While I’m not generally a huge supporter of people who don’t pay their rent (and think they can get away with it), it’s a shame that club owner Hilly Kristal made the tragic mistake of thinking he’d be bullet proof to eviction in a town where real estate is more precious than gold or diamonds.
