As a fun and innovative way to celebrate the 2022 Holiday Season, the Museum of the City of New York invited top bakeries and amateur bakers from across the city to enter Gingerbread New York City: the Great Burrough Bake-Off – the museum’s first-ever holiday event aimed at honoring the communities in each of the five boroughs. Select bakers created their own unique gingerbread display to represent their respective neighborhoods, inspired by the theme Winter in New York. A group of prominent New York City-based bakers, curators, and restaurant owners judged the final designs.
Robin Day’s prizewinning design for the Royal Festival Hall chair, created for entry into MoMA’s 1948 International Low-Cost Furniture Competition, helped to launch his career as an industrial designer. Day enjoyed a long-term consultancy with Hille, the chair’s manufacturer, as well as the establishment of a studio with his future wife, Lucienne. Hey what’s up. I’ve got some good news for all of my artist friends out there who wish they could catch a break when it comes to finding exposure for their art, or the elusive gallery representation. Our very favorite art gallery, Jonathan LeVine Projects (now located in beautiful downtown Jersey City) has issued an Open Call to Artists! It is pretty sweet.
It is no secret that LeVine has been the go-to destination for the very best in contemporary Pop and Street Art for over a decade. If you’ve ever thought that your art would be a perfect fit for the gallery, now’s your chance to get in on the action. Jonathan LeVine is looking for the world’s next great artist and wants to see if you have what it takes. The gallery’s first (of what will become an annual) art competition is now open to artists ages 18 and older, and from all backgrounds and levels of experience. Whip out your portfolios and show off your best stuff!

In 1974, Billy Shire was working on a Studded Denim Jacket to advertise his studding business, and decided to enter it into the Levi’s Denim Art Contest. Every winter, world class carvers travel to Ithaca, NY to show off their sculpting skills in a national ice carving event known as Ithaca Ice Wars. Sculptors spend an entire day transforming giant blocks of ice into breathtaking pieces of frozen artwork. You can see how the entire town gets involved in the spirit of finding a way to have a good time while freezing your butt off.
The event at which the above video was filmed took place in late December of 2013. So, while it doesn’t get really freezing in Manhattan until at least January, you can see that folks upstate are already finding ways to turn their suffering into wild adventure at least a month ahead of us.
