Local Surrealist painter Beau Stanton has been an up-and-comer on the New York art scene for a few years now, gaining notoriety through his participation in various group shows on the way to achieving his first New York solo exhibit, up now at Bold Hype Gallery in Chelsea. Beau’s latest collection of paintings, presented under the name Archaic Ornaments, combines classical oil painting with his intricate silk-screened patterns “inspired by pre-modern architecture, letterpress printing designs and decayed infrastructure.” The details of the silk screens come into play especially on Stanton’s layered paintings, such as the series of skull images seen in the photo above, and they really need to be seen up close to be fully appreciated.

Kingdom, By Ray Caesar

Fans of surrealist illustration will not want to miss the latest exhibit at Jonathan Levine Gallery in Chelsea, A Gentle Kind of Cruelty, featuring works by Toronto-based artist Ray Caesar. In this collection, according to the gallery’s press release, “Caesar expands upon his signature aesthetic by taking a more painterly approach, rendering new imagery with softer edges and greater movement than in previous work. The artist’s digitally created dreamscapes, set in elaborately furnished Rococo-style interiors, feature haunting doll-like female figures with delicate features and porcelain complexions.

Must See Art: Jason Limon’s Blood/Nectar Exhibit at NYC’s Bold Hype Gallery

Flourishing By Jason Limon (Media: Acrylic on Panels)

On one of the rainiest Thursday nights in recent history, Geoffrey and I got soaked to the bone splashing through ankle-deep puddles and dodging the deluge while gallery hopping from Chelsea to Soho. Urban Art Safari! One of my favorite exhibits that we were fortunate to make it to that night is Jason Limon’s Blood/Nectar, currently on view over at the Bold Hype Gallery, which is a must see for fans of surrealist painting. Jason paints in acrylics on canvas and wood panels as well, with his subjects incorporating fusions of organic matter, such as birds that have evolved to be part plant or part machine.

His paintings are really cool and remind me a lot of one of my other favorite contemporary surrealist painters, Greg “Craola” Simkins. Jason Limon is getting added to my list of cool artists to pay attention to. Check his stuff out while you can!
