Back in October of 2017, a new work by London-based artist, Lakwena Mciver took over the Bowery Mural Wall, located at the intersection of Houston and Bowery. The colorful, kaleidoscopic piece, which reads Lift You Higher, is actually part of a marketing stunt for Instagram’s #KindComments campaign, in partnership with Goldman Properties, which owns and curates the wall. Joey Ramone Memorial Mural in the Bowery
This image of the late Joey Ramone wearing a pair of Boxing Gloves was created to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of The Ramones debuting at CBGB. The mural went up on September 3rd, 2015 but it took me a few weeks to get around to seeing it for the first time, in early October, which is when I took this photo while (literally) standing in the middle of the street between idling cars that were waiting for the light to change at the corner of Bleecker and the Bowery — directly across from the former location of the legendary music venue, which is now a John Varvatos Clothing Boutique. The mural was painted by Solus and John CRASH Matos, who you might remember from This Post.
Update: As of August 24th, 2017 The Joey Ramone Mural has been Replaced by a Mural of Blondie’s Debbie Harry.
Pink Thing of The Day: Man Balancing a Large Stuffed Pink Pig on His Head
I was riding the M3 Bus uptown on Bowery coming home from Chinatown and I noticed a man, walking with his girlfriend, who was also carrying a very large, stuffed Pink Pig.
When the bus stopped at a light around 5th Street, the man suddenly put the pig on his head, balanced it perfectly, and his girlfriend took a photo. I also took a photo, or three. Because, NYC.
The light changed and the bus started moving again. The couple and their large stuffed pig continued on their way, as did I.
Why Is This FDNY Call Box Painted Fluorescent Orange?
This old-school FDNY Call Box on the corner of Bowery and Rivington, is easy to spot, as it is painted a bright florescent orange. According to Bowery Boogie, the call box was formerly an art installation; part of Two Rams Gallery’s Alarm! exhibition, which ran from February 5 – 22nd, 2015, and for which the call box was painted bright florescent Red. As the exhibit has now ended, I imagine someone felt it was necessary to achieve closure by painting it orange.
Hektad Loves You
The street artist known as Hektad has left this message of love for all NYers in the form of a colorfully painted alternative weekly distribution box located on the western traffic island at the intersection of Houston and Bowery (where I stood to photograph the Ron English Mural currently on display).
Please Don’t Steal It, OK?
