Pink Thing of The Day: Exterior of Pink Restaurant

Pietro Nolita Photo By Gail Worley

I’ve been hearing about Pietro Nolita since it opened (a few years ago at this point), because it is an Italian Restaurant downtown that’s Pink on the exterior and interior. I’ve always meant to visit, of course — because: Pink Restaurant — but it’s not in my neighborhood and I’m lazy, so I’ve never see the pinkness before in person, until now. Hello and welcome to week two of my ass-kicking East Village Life. In this week’s edition, we will walk through a virtual gallery of assorted street art and public art pieces that I’ve passed by on my weather-permitting daily walks in and around my neighborhood. Enjoy!

Hektad is a name that you’re going see a few times in this post, as his optimism-infused artworks are all over the East Village, especially in the First Street Green Art Park, located on First Street at First Avenue. Since this photo was taken, I believe the park has temporarily closed due to the Covid as it was attracting crowds. And we can’t have that.

Here are a couple of additional Hektad pieces on 11th Street just East of First Avenue. These are side by side, adjacent to this monumental piece by Kobra.

It does not get much more NYC than this mural of King Kong by French graffiti artist Moi One (@moi.one). Find it next to David’s Cafe on St. Mark’s Place near Tompkin’s Square Park.

This colorful tile mosaic by Jim Power, known locally as the Mosaic Man, marks the intersection of Avenue A and St Mark’s Place. Jim composes all of his intricate pieces from up-cycled china, glass, pottery and found objects to create unique, site specific works of art. His mosaics are all over the neighborhood.

Street Art Wall at the Second Avenue F Train Subway Stop

2nd Ave Subway Street Art
All Photos By Gail

While you can’t really help but notice this colorful wall at the entrance to the F Subway Line at Second Avenue and Houston Street, it takes a keen eye to spot the many street artist and taggers represented in this confined space. Aside from the large Skull and Demon Mural (not sure who the artist is, clues left in the comments are appreciated) displayed on the southern exposure of the Avalon Chemists building, we noticed the following: Continue reading Street Art Wall at the Second Avenue F Train Subway Stop

Adrien Brody’s Starbucks Parody: It’s Art!

Brody Bucks

Geoffrey and I went out on a massive Art Crawl this past weekend and we saw the above-pictured posters up everywhere in the Chelsea Gallery District. Apparently, they are adverts for Adrien Brody’s new print series, Hooked. As you can see, it is a parody of the Starbucks brand logo, with the coffee merchant’s familiar Siren mascot holding a pistol to each of her temples. Lovely.

The prints debuted at David Benrimon Fine Art booth at the Art New York fair, which ran from May 3rd to 8th as part of Frieze week.

We saw them again on 20th Street, just outside the tunnel entrance to the Comme des Garcons Boutique. Here, street art/graffiti legend Hektad has already left his mark.
