Modern Art Monday Presents: George Brecht, Repository

George Brecht Repository
Repository, 1961: Wall Cabinet containing pocket watch, thermometer, plastic and rubber balls, baseball, plastic persimmon, Liberty statuette, wood puzzle, toothbrushes, bottle caps, house number, plastic worm, pocket mirror, light bulbs, keys, hardware, photographs (All Photos By Gail)

The objects in this cabinet beg to be activated and handled. A key member of the Fluxus movement, George Brecht (1926 – 2008) choreographed events; more specifically, he turned objects into events by inviting the visitor’s engagement. Repository’s power relies on the strong stimulative nature of the items, and it could never be truly finished because the viewer and the event were always changing. Now that the work has entered an institutional context, however, the need to preserve it overrides the call to participation. Thus, the concept of discovery is forestalled by museum practice, leaving the eventfulness of Repository unfulfilled. Continue reading Modern Art Monday Presents: George Brecht, Repository

Not My Cup of Tea Musical China Cabinet

Not My Cup of Tea
All Photos By Gail

Not My Cup of Tea follows Splendour Lender, a cabinet which addresses the Dutch tradition of displaying one’s porcelain in a “Pronkkast” as a symbol of status and happiness.

A coin, inserted into either cabinet, rolls down the porcelain, producing an enjoyable melody. In contrast to Splendour Lender, which holds a collection of porcelain, this cabinet contains identical cups and plates. While the cabinet alone encapsulates abundance, the meaning behind the phrase “Not My Cup of Tea” suggests discrimination. After each usage, the coin is returned, which would usually happen when a product is defective. The repetitious cups and their tunes show the universal cycle of consumption, the financial greed of modern times, regardless of difference in taste.

Created by Designer Jelle Mastenbroek, Eindhoven, Netherlands. Available at Chamber, Located at 515 W. 23rd Street, in the Chelsea Gallery District. Hours are Tuesday – Saturday 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM.

Pink Thing of The Day: Pink Fuzzy Cabinet Shelving!

The Seventies Will Never Die

Designer Ryan Humphrey – a former contestant on Bravo’s Top Design – got what can only be called wildly creative with his apartment redesign project, which features these Hot pink fake fur-lined shelving units. Oh my. Ryan explains: “These are guitar amplifier cabinets that I turned into bookshelves lined with faux fur. Nothing says ‘Hair Metal’ more than high quality pink fur.” I would have them in my house; that is without question. Read all about the redesign project and see pictures of all of the other rooms (hint: very cool) at this link.
