If you loved Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon – the epic period drama about a beguiling rogue who manipulates (read: boinks) his way to the top of 18th century European society – but would prefer to skip all of those gory battle scenes — and have the run time cut down from three hours to an economical 100 minutes, you might enjoy a new film called Bel Ami. Man, this is some sad news right here. Adam Yauch, founding member of the legendary Beastie Boys, has passed away today, May 4th, 2012 after hard fought three year battle with cancer. The rapper, also known as MCA, was 47 years old. In addition to his talent as a rapper and musician, Yauch was also a filmmaker who, under the pseudonym Nathanial Hornblower, directed many of The Beastie Boys’ videos, including the 2006 Beastie Boys concert film Awesome; I Fuckin’ Shot That! Yauch is survived by his wife Dechen Wangdu, and their daughter. Rest in peace.

The Joss Whedon-produced, Drew Goddard-directed horror/comedy The Cabin in The Woods is one such film. As I sat through the closing credits at last night’s press screening (exit music by Nine Inch Nails. Yes!) I was honestly confounded as to how I could “review” this film without ruining the sublime pleasure of navigating its multilayered, non-traditional plot detours. Because, in this case, the less you know about The Cabin in the Woods, the more satisfying your experience of the movie will be.

The Radiant Child: A Film DJ Spooky Didn’t Want Me to See

Portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat By Shepard Fairey

Few things are more personally disappointing to me than people who promise something and then fail to deliver. (Note: people who behave in this manner are also sometimes euphemistically referred to as “liars”). Last week, both Geoffrey and I received email invitations to an advance screening of the soon to be released documentary, Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child, which is Director Tamra Davis’ film about the late NYC painter.
