Italian food is a cuisine for which New York City is deservedly famous. From the upper west side to Little Italy, there is certainly no shortage of Italian dining establishments to frequent. But if you’re looking for one restaurant offering an updated take on tradition that can also satisfy the diverse cravings of every member of your party – whether it be for pizza, pasta, meat or fish you might want to check out Donatella, located right in the heart of Chelsea, because this place is really something special.  Proprietor Donatella Arpaia (formerly of David Burke & Donatella fame) has created a down-to-earth yet classy culinary experience where the wood-fired pizzas are joined by more-formal fare, all served in a modern, well-lit and highly inviting space.

Upstairs at the Kimberly Hotel: Much More than Just Rooftop Cocktails

When you get right down to it, there are woefully too few days in a New York City summer where the planets align to create weather that’s both seductively warm and miraculously free from precipitation, making for the perfect scenario for a rooftop dining experience. We enjoyed just such a cosmic occurrence one evening last week, when we were fortunate enough to snag a prime table at Upstairs, the luxurious rooftop restaurant and bar located on the Penthouse level of the Kimberly Suites Hotel.

Unlike similar venues that may flaunt coveted Rooftop views of our fair Metropolis while phoning it in when it comes to service and consumables, Upstairs backs up its bragging rights with an impressive menu of gourmet eats and signature summer cocktails that will add significant value to your evening of memorable views. Fine Dining at Philippe: Haute Chinese Cuisine By Philippe Chow

Fine Dining in Manhattan isn’t always all about molecular gastronomy and tiny portions served on over-sized plates. While “Fine Dining Bargain” is not a phrase you are likely to hear at any time other than during restaurant week, there are upscale restaurants in town where you can get an exceptional value for your hard earned cash while also indulging your inner Foodie. One such destination is Philippe on East 60th Street, which has become a favorite of celebrity clientele from Lady Gaga to President Obama, and we think we know why: the location is discreet and food is off the hook.

Milk Street Cafe to Open “Food Hall” on Wall Street

Formerly home to gourmet eatery Mangia, the cavernous, street level storefront in the Trump Building at 40 Wall Street will soon be the home to Milk Street Café Food Hall, an oasis of culinary delights set to open for business on June 23, 2011. The 23,000 square foot restaurant is the latest venture from Marc Epstein, who founded Boston’s Milk Street Cafe 30 years ago. The Boston Milk Street – also located in that city’s financial district – got its start as a vegetarian cafe and has gone on to become a leading force in the lucrative world of corporate catering. No doubt Epstein has similar goals in mind for the new Wall Street space.

On Monday evening, Milk Street opened for press previews with an informal tasting party that also featured tours of the massive, state of the art kitchen. Executive Chef at Milk Street on Wall is Steven Mettle, formerly the Executive Chef of AIG, so you know he’s an expert at feeding this type of demanding but loyal clientele. At 40 Wall, Milk Street introduces a new retail concept of a large food hall with a variety of different made-to-order food stations. The stations will include: a barista/cafe, hot made-to-order breakfasts, oatmeal bar, breakfast & lunch paninis, pasta bar, Farmer’s Market Salads (vegetarian salad bar), Bull Market Salads (featuring ‘blue chips’ with beef and chicken mix-ins), sushi, Pacific Rim specialties, a grill, carvery sandwiches, rotisserie, homemade pastries & cakes, and an express lane. The dining area, tucked well away from the busy food stations, looks more like the dining room of trendy restaurant than a cafeteria, and can comfortably seat around 150 people. While I only tasted a few dishes, I can say that the Sushi at Milk Street is the best I’ve had in the city (Note: I’ve not yet been to Nobu) and their fruit smoothies are also quite delicious. I’m looking forward to visiting again for lunch once they open in just over two weeks.

Milk Street Cafe Food Hall is located at 40 Wall Street in the Financial Distinct, Downtown NYC. Closest subways are the 2 or 3, or the 4 or 5 to the Wall Street Stop on either line. Hours are Monday – Thursday 6:30 AM – 9 PM, Friday 6:30 AM – 3 PM, Closed Weekends.
