The Story Behind A Charming Street Art Enigma: The Spray Paints Series

While most of the street art that I discover on my adventures is clearly tagged, sometimes that tag is hard to decipher, and I need some assistance identifying the artist. By connecting with artists on Instagram, I’ve learned that they all seem to know and support each other, which is cool and very helpful.  If I don’t know the artist behind a work that I want to put on the blog, and the first person I ask doesn’t know, then they know someone who does. This is how I ended up connecting with the creator of an unsigned series of works that I’ve been seeing on the streets, and documenting, since around Christmastime last year. Each of the paste-ups in this very distinctive series features one to three still life images accompanied by a one-word title, and the artist’s signature conspicuously absent. If you live in the east village or downtown, there’s no way you haven’t seen them. All I can say is that they speak to me.

Ah, pandemic-themed street art: I love it. Slum Sex (spray-painted sometimes in Pink, and sometimes not) is a tag by renegade street artist Schizo 27 (@shizo27), who is a member of the 2wo 7even Bandits; a crew that actually rejects the name ‘crew’ and instead refer to themselves as a team of art ‘Bandits.’ This, I  also love. All members of the 2wo 7even Bandits add the number 27 to their tags.

Pink Thing of The Day: Pink Spray Painted Head of a Warrior

This pink spray paint rendering of what I interpret to be the Head of a Mayan Warrior is tagged on a brick wall on East 10th Street between Avenues B and C. I was originally going to include it in this past Tuesday’s post on My East Village Covid Experience, but thought better of that, because I needed a Pink Thing for this week. Any port in a storm.

I was on my was to Beyond The Streets when I passed by a vacant lot, and noticed this fun Pink Bird which had been spray-painted on an adjacent wall. The tag says “Nico,” but I can’t find a street artist with that tag in the Google. So, whatever. This is on Kent Street just north of North 7th Street, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Just in time for Spring, the First Street Green Art Park has turned over a new batch of cool and colorful murals, such as this one by Brooklyn-based multi-media artist Grace Lang, AKA Grooseling. This piece went up in early March, 2019. Find out more about Lang and see work from her extensive portfolio, at This Link!
