Musical Symbolism in Star Wars

Star Wars takes place in a galaxy far, far away, with melodies that echo in all the universe, even in this world. Thanks to the brilliant composer John Williams, the introduction to the magical world full of heroic, despicable, and strange-looking characters was awe-inspiring and sometimes hilarious. Music is a special art form for creating depth in any scene. Williams’s musical scores and staccato beats have, not only increased the meaning of the films but also, musically explained mysterious scenes.

Do you like Butts? I understand that many people do. While each of us has a butt, what would happen if inanimate objects or foods, like toilet paper rolls, cactuses and slices of Marriage Equality Cake each had a butt? What then? Continue reading Yes, It Exists: Butt Stickers

Gallerist Eric Allouche has relocated his eponymous exhibit space from the meatpacking district (where it was just across the street from The Whitney) to deep SoHo, which we think was a smart move. The gallery is currently hosting Now You See It, a show comprised of pop surrealist Ron English’s nostalgic skewering of favorite pop culture characters, from Breakfast Cereal Mascots to reimagined Star Wars characters.

Star Wars / The Beatles / Sgt. Pepper Mash Up

Star Wars Beatles Mash Up

It was at the Five Points Festival that I spotted this amazing painting by artist Paul Fernandez-Carol that mashes up The Beatles with characters from Star Wars in a very clever way. On one hand, we could be looking at The Beatles, dressed in their colorful, highly-recognizable satin band suits from the Sgt. Pepper-album cover — Ringo in Pink, John in Yellow, Paul in Blue and George in Red — who are avoiding being recognized by wearing disguises on their heads. On the other hand, this might be the Star Wars saga characters of a Scout Trooper, Darth Vader, Boba Fett and an Imperial Stormtrooper (who are all distinguishable by the helmets they wear) posing as The Beatles. Who can say? Speaking of posing, I believe that the figures’ poses in this painting were copied from This Photo of the Fab Four taken in 1967 during a promotional photo shoot for the Sgt. Pepper album cover. You can see more art by Fernandez-Carol on his page at Seven Arts Gallery.
