Pink Thing of The Day: Face Jug By Therman Statom

This pink glass Face Jug (2025) by renowned glass artist Therman Statom is one of a set of six created with a rounded body,  a sculpted face, full lips, strong  brows, large eyes, and the thoughtful expression. The vessels are inspired by eighteenth-century face jugs created by the descendants of West Africans in South Carolina. Originally made using clay, face jugs were a way for enslaved peoples to preserve their African culture of beliefs, including honoring one’s ancestors.

Jeff Koons’ Porcelain Series at Gagosian Gallery

In the two decades I’ve been writing this website, Jeff Koons is probably the living artist I’ve covered the most — and that’s because I genuinely love his work. I know he gets a lot of criticism, and not all of it is undeserved, but even when I have my own reservations, I still give him a pass. His work is unique, beautiful, monumental, and often very funny. I’m not about to apologize for the fact that he’s one of my two favorite living artists. So when he has a show in New York, I’m there — every time — ready to experience that particular spark of genius he brings.

Braving some truly unfriendly winter weather, I recently made my way to Gagosian Gallery to see The Porcelain Series, Koons’ latest exhibition. Any time I’m in the presence of his mirror-finished sculptures, I swoon a little, so this was not something I was going to miss. The show brings together new and recent sculptures alongside a selection of abstract paintings, all centered around his ongoing Porcelain Series.

At first glance, Happiness (1994–95) by Victor Estrada seems to promise exactly what its title suggests: something bright, buoyant, and easy to love. The sculpture greets viewers with a riot of color and a playful, almost cartoonish presence. But as is often the case with Estrada’s work, things get more complicated the longer you look. Modern Art Monday Presents: Inflatable Felix By Mark Leckey

While searching the Internet, London-based artist, Mark Leckey (b. 1964) came across an unusual photograph of a papier-mâché model of Felix the Cat surrounded by an array of strange machines. The photo was taken in 1928 at NBC’s Studios in New York, where the then-radio broadcaster was experimenting with the first television transmissions. Surrounding Felix – a cartoon character who first appeared in 1919 – was a primitive array of mechanical scanners that were used in the first attempt at transmitting pictures over the air waves.

Product Review: The Portable Watercolor Setup That Finally Clicked for Me

I never expected to become a watercolor person. I can’t sketch a face to save my life, and the last time I picked up a paintbrush was probably in elementary school. But lately, I kept noticing these tiny, pocket-sized watercolor kits everywhere—on café tables, tucked into backpacks, balanced on park benches. There was something about the simplicity of it that felt quietly irresistible.

So one weekend, I gave in. I took a small palette, a cup of water, and sat down on a bench near my apartment. Twelve minutes later, I had a slightly wonky painting of the tree across the path. It wasn’t technically good — but it was unexpectedly satisfying, the kind of small creative moment that lingers long after you pack everything away.
