Any weekday that I walk south on Wall Street towards Water Street to catch a bus home, I pass by this otherwise unremarkable Dollar Sign-Shaped Bike Rack, which not everyone knows was designed by Talking Heads front man, Fine Artist and Avid Bicyclist David Byrne. Until some time last year (I didn’t pay attention to exactly when this changed) there was an inverted paper coffee up — which no one would stop long enough to remove — covering the upward end of the ‘S’ shape.

Pink Thing of The Day: Pink Rubber House on an Exercise Bike

Trimcycle By Battle Creek is the name of this sculpture, which is comprised of a Pink Silicone Rubber House draped over a vintage Exercise Bicycle. It is part of the exhibit Bent, by artist Brian Tolle, from his group series known collectively as Levittown.

Eye On Design: Benjamin J. Bowden’s Spacelander Bicycle

Designed by Benjamin Bowden (1907 – 1998) the aluminum prototype for this futuristic Spacelander bicycle was handmade by the MG Auto Company in England in 1946.  The original design incorporated an ingenious dynamo that stored the downhill energy  and released it on uphill runs. Azuma Makoto is a florist and botanical artist, known for incorporating nature into his fantastical and often surreal work. This Bicycle, from the artist’s Botanical series, is covered in AstroTurf, but still functions as a ride-able bike. Each Bike is unique and sells for about $5,000.

When I was a teenager, there was a popular saying that “A Woman Needs a Man Like a Fish Needs a Bicycle” — which is still totally true, if a bit dated. I thought of that saying immediately when I saw the Fish-Bicycle hybrid sculpture, Peixe Com Auréola (Fish with Halo), at Anton Kern Gallery this past Friday, when I was there for the opening reception for new works by the Brazilian Artist called Marepe.
