If you’ve wandered along the gritty stretch of Canal Street where the LES meets Chinatown, you’ve probably passed right by a storefront that feels like a glitch in the matrix. Nestled among cell phone kiosks and dollar stores is New Hi-Tech Corp, a longstanding electronics repair shop at 47 Canal Street (founded in 1983) whose hypnotic display window turns more heads than any shiny gadget inside ever could.
Finally, there’s bright spot on this dismal end of year season. Pearl River Mart, everyone’s favorite Asian Imports Store, has reopened as a Pop-Up at 395 Broadway. Oh, Happy Day. This space will become the store’s permanent location after a brief shuttering in February 2017 to allow for further construction on the interior. I wish I had gotten to this mural before the D-Bag taggers did. Don’t Call Me Baby by Baron Von Fancy is part of #TheNewAllen murals project on the store fronts along Allen Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. You can see many of them if you take the M15 Bus route south of Houston Street!

Street art legend Buff Monster created this surreal mural, depicting a variation on his signature theme of Hot Pink Anthropomorphic Ice Cream treats on the security gate for Bondy Export Corp, located a 40 Canal Street. The mural is part of the 100 Gates Public Art project.
Tucked along Lafayette Street between Canal and Howard, this striking mural pays tribute to Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, whose brief but transformative stay in New York City in 1929–30 inspired his landmark work Poet in New York.
