When the only outdoor activity that’s still permitted is taking a walk, it’s important to give your walks a purpose. As the Covid Life hit us back in mid-March, I started collecting what you might call ‘mundane’ pictures on my iPhone camera roll during my afternoon jaunts; documenting things I see in the East Village in order to share the stories these photos tell about the people who live in my awesome neighborhood. For as long as this shit lasts, I’ll be publishing a thematic weekly series of photo-blog posts featuring snapshots from my East Village Life, so that we all might feel more connected. This week’s theme is Storefronts. Enjoy!

Clash City Tattoo located at 273 E 10th Street, takes its name from the song “Clash City Rocker” which you can find on the 1977 debut album by, you guessed it, The Clash.

This is the Pyramid Club, a nightclub on Avenue A that’s been open since 1979 — wow! Nirvana once played there before they got to be a big deal, and I interviewed a few rockers inside its walls back in my rock critic days. They still host weekly ’80s New Wave dance parties and shit like that. I believe Pyramid Club will survive the Covid crisis.

The handwritten sign posted out front of Psychic Readings By Honeybee, which is also on Avenue A near 14th Street, indicates that, despite their storefront being closed for business, they are still conducting “Readings Over The Phone.” One wonders why their advance psychic knowledge of the upcoming shutdown did not provided ample time to have a more professional sign prepared.

Pink Thing of The Day: Pinky’s Space

Pinky's Space
Photos By Gail

Pinky’s Space is an adorable little French / Southern Comfort Food restaurant that always has something fantastically Pink and eye-catching displayed in its front window. When I passed by on a recent Saturday afternoon, I had to cross the street to get a snap of this adorable Pink Gorilla and his little Japanese friend, Domo. I want to eat there.

On the Saturday that NYC experienced its first snowfall of the 2017 Holiday season, I strolled by the Bergdorf Goodman windows on Fifth Avenue on my way to see a movie at the Paris Theatre. Even in the snow and related bluster, the sidewalks were clogged with tourists lined up to take photos and selfies in front of this gorgeous tableau, and you can see why! Check Them Out!

Bergdorf Goodman’s holiday window displays have long been a festive cornerstone on Fifth Avenue and this year, the department store continues its tradition of visual storytelling with an exhibit titled To New York, With Love. Each window is dedicated to a world-renowned NYC cultural institution, such as the New York Philharmonic, the American Museum of Natural History, and the New York Botanical Garden.

I believe that  To New York, With Love will be up through the end of January, as the next set of windows are scheduled to go up in February. Watch a fun and fascinating video of how these windows came together at This Link!

Talk about an “Oh Wow” factor that is just off the charts! This breathtaking, Pink Fantasy Window Display at the Buffalo Exchange vintage clothing store stopped me dead in my tracks.

Pink Apron Dress

As if the above Pink Apron Dress wasn’t eye-catching enough, the window dressers accessorized the mannequin’s outside with vintage toys, and more toys were strewn as the base of the display. It was like Christmas, Easter and Halloween all in one display!

Disco Ball Head Mannequins
“My Favorite Color is Rainbow” (All Photos By Gail)

It must have been some kind of cosmic coincidence that, while walking to the train after attending a late night Birthday party for Randy Jones, best known as The Cowboy from ’70s Disco legends The Village People, I passed right by the iconic NYC department store, Bergdorf Goodman, and got a face full of this mind-blowing, disco ball extravaganza window display.

My Favorite Color is Rainbow

My Favorite Color is Rainbow is just one in series of over-the-top window display tableaus created by W Magazine in honor of Italian fashion editor and stylist Giovanna Battaglia‘s new book Gio_Graphy: Fun in the Wild World of Fashion. The hardcover book is described as, “A witty guide to living the glam the life from an international style star, featuring hilarious anecdotes, fashion advice, and much more. Dubbed a “cyber icon” and “fashion heroine” by the New York Times, Battaglia is known for her colorful street style and fun-loving personality. Her monthly column in W chronicles fashion, art, and adventure. In this, her first book, she has written an irreverent how-to guide for dressing for every occasion, finding fashion inspiration, living stylishly, and having fun while doing it. Heck Yeah!

Disco Ball Headed Mannequin Window Shot

Covering style and beauty for daytime, nighttime, travel, and work, this book is brimming with chic and inspirational wisdom, from how to pull off bold fashion moves like barely-there tops, enormous hats, and powerful reds; advice for how to survive fashion emergencies (like what happens when you show up to an event in the same dress as someone else); and her secrets for donning multiple outfits in a day (bodysuits are key). Also featured are tips and tricks she has learned from fashion-world friends. Filled with humor and style, this is a must-have book for anyone interested in fashion and having a good time.

If you can’t make it to Bergdorf Goodman (located at 754 5th Avenue (at 58th Street), New York, NY 10019 you can buy the book (which has a publication date of October 24, 2017) at This Link!
