Resembling a soft-serve ice cream swirl, the upper portion of this sculpture consists of the world’s largest crystal ruby, at 30,090 carats. Artist and Devo front man Mark Mothersbaugh had the gem carved to poke fun at both fine jewelry and fine art. A ludicrous send-up of both disciplines, the sculpture, Ruby Kusturd (2009 – 14) evinces Mothersbaugh’s longtime interest in using humor as a means of cultural and institutional critique. Pink Thing of The Day: Pink Morganite Crystal Musician Statue

As a way to escape the oppressive heat here in Manhattan this past Sunday, we went on an Urban Adventure to the American Museum of Natural History! There, in the Hall of Gems, we spotted this little statue of a Musician Playing a Zither sculpted from PinkMorganite    If you haven’t yet managed to see this particular area of the museum, you really do need to check it out.
