It’s no secret that the Park Avenue malls frequently play host to impressive public art installations, but I wasn’t expecting to stumble upon this year’s exhibition while walking home from the Morgan Library. As I crossed East 36th Street, I was greeted on both the north and south sides of Park Avenue by a pair of exuberant floral sculptures created by Israeli artist Dorit Levinstein, whose work is represented by Eden Gallery. It was my first encounter with these sculptures, and their bold colors and joyful energy immediately brightened the afternoon. If you’re an art fan who loves taking advantage of the many free things there are to do and see in New York City, then sometimes you can be a little bit late to the party. Maybe you missed the initial wave of press announcing Sea Idylls, Carole A. Feuerman’s hyper-realist sculptures of swimmers and acrobats installed on the Park Avenue Malls way back in April, because you were too busy paying attention to other stuff. There’s some new wildlife prowling around the Park Avenue Malls between 34th and 38th Streets, but it’s no reason for alarm. These creatures — which range from Gorillas and Buffalos to a T Rex and Saber Tooth Tiger are part of a public art installation sponsored by Patrons of Park Avenue (POPA). French / Tunisian artist Idriss B has created a fantastical menagerie in his signature origami-like, polygonal style, which has taken up residence in the Murray Hill-adjacent neighborhood for a full year. It’s not always easy to keep up with all of the Public Art installed in and around Manhattan at any given time, but I stumbled on the piece above, a towering, abstract white and cream fiberglass structure entitled Runner (2017), by sculptor Tony Cragg, when I visited the Park Avenue Armory for Nick Cave’s The Let Go installion. Runner is right out front of the Armory at the corner of 67th Street. When I left the Armory, I snapped a few additional shots of Runner before heading back down town.
