Georgetown Cupcake Debuts in Soho!

Georgetown Cupcake Opening Party
Photos By Anne Raso

Last evening, we dined on cupcakes and champagne — not kidding – at a festive and fancy launch party for the newest location (Prince Street in Soho) of Georgetown Cupcake, officially opening to the public on Saturday February 11, 2012. Some killjoys and curmudgeons may speculate that the Cupcake Craze is on the wane, but there is much evidence to the contrary. It seems to us that there are specialists in this niche of the baking spectrum who are just getting started in their quest to do these tiny cakes differently / better than any other bakers! Georgetown Cupcake certainly has a foothold in the realm of doing whatever it takes to bring Cupcakes to, as they say, the next level.

The Voltaggio Brothers Take On: Thanksgiving For the Cooking Channel!

Bryan & Michael Voltaggio (All Photos By Anne Raso)

Handsome and talented brothers sporting as many tattoos as members of Motley Crue, Chefs Michael and Bryan Voltaggio first gained national recognition as contestants on Bravo TV’s Top Chef: Las Vegas – my personal favorite season of Top Chef to date. Out of four very charismatic finalists, the competition ended with Michael taking home the title of Top Chef and Bryan finishing a close second to his brother. Sibling rivalry, not kidding! While I confess that I was a total Bryan fan – cheering for him to pull off a victory – it cannot be denied that Michael was a deserving champion. Because let’s face it, these guys can cook.

Taco Bell Birthday Cake

This rad birthday cake in the form of two Taco Bell tacos was made by Laura LeClair Kelley – surely the Coolest Mom in the World – for her son’s 12th birthday. Here’s what’s in it: The taco “shells” are made of rolled out snicker-doodle dough with chocolate jimmies throughout for the “flecks.” The inner cake is a frosted chocolate round, cut in half. The lettuce is coconut that has been doctored with green food coloring, the tomatoes are diced up Twizzlers, cheese is rolled out and julienned orange Starbursts and the sour cream is made from giant melted marshmallows. According to Laura, “the entire process was surprisingly easy” and “didn’t take much time to do at all.” So awesome.

Bacon Thing of The Day: Bacon Love 2011 Calendar!

bacon love calendar 2011

Rolling over into a new year means a lot of things to a lot people, but for me it means buying a new calendar so I can keep track of my many social engagements and important dates. My blogging friend Nick just posted about a neat calendar he received that is all about one of the best things on earth: Bacon. According to Nick, who received the Bacon Love 2011 Calendar as a holiday stocking stuffer: “Each day, bacon lovers will enjoy bacon trivia, recipes and even quotes by bacon connoisseurs such as Thomas Jefferson and Homer Simpson!

Shang’s Most Awesome Singapore Slaw: How to Make It

19 Ingredient Singapore Slaw: So Effing Good

Last week Diane (aka “Diaaaahhhnne”) and I made a humble pilgrimage to Shang restaurant, located  at 187 Orchard Street, which is owned and chef’d by the awesome Susur Lee of Top Chef Masters fame. Holy Cow, what that guy does to food is just insane. We ate a whole bunch of amazingly delicious treats including the Asian Slaw you see pictured above, which arrived at our table like an edible tower to food heaven and was suitably tossed and served to us by our very nice waiter. Geezus, this stuff is seriously yummy – and there is so much of it we each had two plates, just as our appetizer. If you are a vegetarian, it could  easily be a main dish.

Anyway, Diane and I have been singing the praises of this slaw to anyone with ears for the past week, and today she did some searching on the Google and found the recipe! Diane! It looks like it would take about a gazillion years to prepare at home, so I would just much rather go back to Shang, pay them 20 bucks and have them make it for me, because that is how I roll. But if you feel like putting in the man hours, check  out the recipe for what is officially called Singapore Slaw With Salted Plum Dressing, which you can find at this link.

Thanks to Diane Anderson for The Tip!
