In 1974, Billy Shire was working on a Studded Denim Jacket to advertise his studding business, and decided to enter  it into the Levi’s Denim Art Contest. His entry, Welfare (1975), which won the competition, is embellished with eleven pounds of rivets, rhinestone rim sets and oversize upholstery tacks typically used on leather and furniture. Fun Video: Ithaca Ice Wars Competiton!

Every winter, world class carvers travel to Ithaca, NY to show off their sculpting skills in a national ice carving event known as Ithaca Ice Wars. Sculptors spend an entire day transforming giant blocks of ice into breathtaking pieces of frozen artwork. You can see how the entire town gets involved in the spirit of finding a way to have a good time while freezing your butt off.

Baker Recreates Sleeping Beauty Cake from Disney Film

When you’ve watched as many cake baking competition shows as I have, you know how hard it is to deliberately make a cake that looks like it’s falling apart, but really isn’t. Check out a screen grab from the original Disney film Sleeping Beauty and you can see that whoever made this cake did a pretty amazing job! Just look at those candles!

Killer Klown Sand Sculpture

The World Championship of Sand Sculpting took place this year in Federal Way, Washington, beginning September 8th, with artists’ work remaining on display until October 10, 2010. The annual event, which draws competitors from around the world, took place in Canada for more than 20 years; this year marked the first time the United States served as the host country.

2010 CANstruction Exhibit Now on View at NYC’s Brookfield Place

For all fans of art and also those fascinated with architecture and design, the annual Canstruction exhibit is a must see. Canstruction, Inc. is a nonprofit organization – and the most unique food charity in the world – that holds annual design and build competitions among those in the architecture and design field where the challenge is to construct fantastic, giant sized, structures made entirely out of canned food. After the structures are built, with the winners in each city chosen, the “canstructions” go on view to the general public as a unique and cohesive art exhibit. This year, 25 amazing sculptures are on view in the Brookfield Place mall located in the World Financial Center in downtown Manhattan.
