Wednesday night was a beautiful night in the city; so warm and clear. It was not surprising to see so many people out in Madison Square Park, many of whom were not even in line for Shake Shack. Geoffrey and I had some time to kill before heading to an event in the neighborhood, so we ventured into the park to find the new resident public art project, which they have in the park every summer. Mad. Sq. Art, the free, contemporary art program of Madison Square Park Conservancy, is currently hosting Fata Morgana an impressive, immersive installation by New York-based artist Teresita Fernández. This is the Conservancy’s largest and most ambitious outdoor sculpture to date.
Discovering cool public art in NYC is part of what makes being an art lover in this city so rewarding. Even though they have been up since February 19th, I just read about Paula Hayes’ Gazing Globes installation in Madison Square Park last week, and with less than a month left to check it out, I felt encouraged by the promise of less frigid weather to head over there this past weekend.
BMF Media is inviting the public to see the art installation they’ve designed and produced for La Roche-Posay Dermatology and the Women’s Dermatologic Society to kick off their Summer in the Shade program. The installation of dozens of suspended orange and white umbrellas is set up in the New York Flatiron Plaza North, on 23rd St. between 5th Ave. and Broadway. New Yorkers will stand in line for anything. This explains why there is generally an hours-long wait (rain or shine) at the Shake Shack burger stand located in Madison Square Park. The thing is, hype is a huge turn off for me and I refuse to wait 90 minutes for a burger.
