When you’ve got a big room, you’ve gotta fill it with big art, amiright? So it seems with Mary Boone’s current exhibit featuring two huge sculptures by pop artist KAWS. The sheer scale of these massive wooden figures immediately brought to mind Paul McCarthy’s recent White Snow exhibit at Hauser & Wirth.
Well, you can see by the human persons who would not get out of the way of my shots that both of these imposing sculptures, which depict KAWS’ familiar figure known as Companion, stand at over eighteen feet tall and almost reach the gallery roof! Nyehaus Gallery, located in a gorgeous restored brownstone on West 20th Street, has launched an exciting exhibition of new resin works by pioneering California-based Light and Space artist, Peter Alexander. This exhibit was a delightful companion piece to the Keith Sonnier exhibit I saw at Mary Boone last month, being all about minimalism, color and the interaction of light and art. There is something so beautiful about the juxtaposition of neon tubing and glass panes. Geoffrey and I impulsively popped in to the Mary Boone Gallery on 24th Street last evening, on the way from Gagosian’s nearly overwhelming Basquiat retrospective to LeVine’s How & Nosm Pop Up on 23rd Street, and discovered an unexpected treat in Keith Sonnier’s 68-70 exhibit. If a first glance at the photo above has you wondering how a gallery floor covered with a vast and pristine aggregation of Sunflower Seeds qualifies as “Art,” please consider that these aren’t merely sunflower seeds but, rather, tiny hand-painted ceramic sculptures of Sunflower Seeds, and you may find your perception shifting. The Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea is currently hosting an installation of Ai Weiwei’s Sunflower Seeds (2010), which originally debuted at London’s Tate Modern, where it covered nearly the entire floor of the Turbine Hall gallery. The Boone Gallery show has been significantly scaled down in size (from 100 million seeds in the original installation to several million here) but it is nevertheless an impressive sight.
